The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
For the entire fullness of God’s nature dwells bodily in Christ, and you have been filled by Him, who is the head over every ruler and authority.
Colossians 2:9-10 HCSB
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
You are what you eat.
Maybe you have heard this saying a time or two in regard to a person’s diet.
Of course, the premise here is that your health will depend on what you put into your body through your mouth, whether liquids or solids.
Eat and drink healthy, satisfying yourself with food and beverages that benefit your body, and you can protect your vital organs, staving off illnesses and diseases that wreak havoc and lower life expectancy.
Decide you are going to eat and drink whatever you want in whatever quantities you want without regulation is typically going to lead a person to regret that lifestyle decision somewhere down the road. Unfortunately, once the body is afflicted, the impact can often be irreversible.
There’s another saying I used to use when I was raising my two daughters. I would point to my ears and eyes while telling them that whatever went into either would impact the heart and mind. In other words, whatever a person chooses to listen to or watch will impact the way they think, speak, and act.
Watch and listen to things that are moral and right, and your subsequent behavior will usually be likewise. Conversely, expose yourself to sinful words and actions, and you will often find yourself repeating those actions, sometimes with extremely dire consequences.
With all this, we are always filling our bodies with something that impacts our physical or mental health.
But what about our spiritual health? Shouldn’t we give attention to that as well?
We should but sadly, fewer and fewer people are giving this third major aspect of their human self much consideration.
The French philosopher Pascal once wrote that every person has a God-sized hole inside of them and only God can fill it. I think there’s great validity to this and it reinforces the scriptures as we look at the words of the Apostle Paul in chapter 2 of Colossians:
For the entire fullness of God’s nature dwells bodily in Christ, and you have been filled by Him, who is the head over every ruler and authority. Vv. 9-10 HCSB
In chapter one, we looked at answers to the question, “Who is Jesus?”, and one of those answers was that Jesus was one with God. God’s word tells us that “Christ is the visible image of the invisible God” (v. 15a) and He is “supreme over all creation” (v. 15b). Jesus Himself said that “all authority in heaven and on earth” had been given to Him (Matthew 28:18).
So we know from this that “the entire fullness of God’s nature dwells bodily in Christ” and He “is the head over every ruler and authority”. In other words, Jesus carries with Him the full power and authority of God the Father, our Maker and Master.
Hold that thought for a moment and then let this soak in.
When you choose to believe in Jesus and therefore become a Christian, you are filled by Him.
Think about that a minute and what this means in regard to spiritual health.
The Savior of the world, the One who God placed in charge of all creation, the only human being who ever lived a perfectly holy, sinless life, fills every person who chooses to accept Him as their Savior. So if you’re in Christ, you are saturated by His goodness, His love, His kindness, His holiness, and His power.
Friends, isn’t this the good news we need to hear today from our Lord as we live in a world where Satan works to fill people with sinfulness and wickedness, making them enemies of God?
Yes, we strive to bring the Gospel to others so they might believe in Jesus and be saved but let us never forget that we should also be overjoyed that the new Christian is filled by Jesus the very moment they choose to believe.
As you read this today, have you accepted Jesus and received Him into your heart, mind, body, and soul?
If not, I pray you will ask Him to be your Savior today. You’ll never ever regret doing so.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
