The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.

Colossians 3:15

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

I don’t know about you but every day I find myself looking at the world around me and yearning for a return to peace because the propensity of conflict in the way nations, political parties, people in general, and even in the Christian church wears me out. I’m so tired of it all.

Maybe you feel the same way.

So where do we start turning things around? How can we get to a place where we can co-exist with one another in such a way where serenity is pervasive, no matter where we are?

It seems impossible, right?

That is, until we consider we serve a Lord who routinely makes the impossible possible and the only hope we can have for peace is to turn to the One who is the Prince of it, our Lord Jesus.

We know He is the Prince of peace because the scriptures tell us as the prophet Isaiah foretells Jesus’ coming. Here’s what he says in chapter 9:

For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. Vv. 6-7a

Here, we learn that Jesus is not only the Prince of peace but that the great peace found in Him is endless. That means there is no way for peace to run out when anyone turns to Him. There’s more than enough solace to go around for anyone who desires it.

That’s what makes today’s life resolution, number six in this series from the third chapter of Colossians, so important. Because if we have any hope of living lives that are happy and cherished, we need peace to reign supreme in and around us and it will if we resolve to let “the peace of Christ rule in our hearts”.

The key word here is “rule”. By definition, it means “control or dominion” over something and in the context of what God’s word is conveying to us through this sixth resolution, we are to submit to the control and dominion of Jesus’ peace, allowing it to fill our hearts. For when we do, His peace will dominate the way we live with others and with ourselves.

Go back to the very first resolution and you’ll remember that the Lord commands that we set our hearts on things above. Peace is just one of the rewards we gain when we do so and my prayer for you today is that you seek and gain the peace of our Savior Jesus, a peace that surpasses all.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
