The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.
Colossians 4:2
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Today, we briefly move out of Colossians chapter 3 to chapter 4 for our ninth of ten life resolutions from God’s word. Here’s what the scriptures are calling us to do as Christians in today’s verse:
RESOLUTION #9: Devote yourself to prayer.
Everything we have covered to date will only happen when we develop a solid, unwavering relationship with the Lord and the only way that proper relationships are fostered in life is when we communicate consistently and properly.
It’s true, right?
If we are truly going to relate well with someone, communication is the lifeblood of that relationship, the blood that courses through the veins of the connection we have with them. Stop communicating and it’s akin to a heart that stops beating. Like death will occur in life, so too do relationships tend to die off when people aren’t talking.
Of course, when people are communicating, they need to make sure they are doing so properly. Using language that denigrates, degrades, or devalues another person is more conducive to division than it is unity. The scripture talks a lot about the tongue and the importance of keeping it under control. Perhaps more people should follow that guidance because there’s certainly too much venomous rhetoric flying around our society today between people that burn down bridges to relationship rather than build them up.
So how can we communicate well and build relationships properly?
It starts with communicating with the Lord and building a strong relationship with Him first, and that communication is done through prayer.
Our resolution for today commands us to devote time to prayer, to intentionally enter into an intimate conversation with the Lord who hears and listens when we call. In fact, there is no other relationship you will have in life where someone will perfectly be there for you through your entire lifetime.
If we want to know how to live, we need only ask the Lord and He will dictate our behavior through the work and power of the Holy Spirit.
If we have a need, we should turn to the Lord and ask Him to meet that need in accordance with His will and plan for our lives.
If we’re dealing with a difficult situation that requires an equally challenging decision, we can turn to the Lord and He will let us know what He wants us to do because that’s what really matters most.
And when we want to feel loved and valued, we will always find it perfectly through talking with the Lord who cares for us more than anyone else.
Friends, we have conversations with people all the time but the most important conversation we will ever have (and we need to have it daily) is with our Lord. We should rejoice and be glad that He isn’t distant and disinterested in having a relationship with us. Rather, the Maker and Master of all things calls us to be devoted to socializing with Him and His communication lines are always open through prayer.
In the end translation, I would submit to you today that there’s no more special relationship you can have in life than with the Lord and the more we work at developing that relationship, the stronger and stronger it becomes.
Today, and every day, devote yourself to prayer, being watchful and thankful. I promise you, it will always be the best and most meaningful conversation you will have.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
