The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.

Ephesians 2:1-3

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Can a person be alive even though they are also dead?

There was a long running show on television that was based on that premise, The Walking Dead. In it, the dead would reanimate with a hunger to attack and eat living things, especially humans. A single bite from one of the living dead would infect the person who was bit and they would die and come back to life a zombie.

Of course, it was a series grounded in fiction but as we see in the opening verses of Ephesians, chapter 2, the matter of people being dead although alive is a definite reality from a spiritual perspective. Look again at these words here:

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. Vv. 1-3

Here we find a reversal of the dead to life model from the fantasy television series. In The Walking Dead, a person would die and then come back to life. In the Bible’s truth, a person is spiritually dead first and then comes alive in Christ Jesus.

The Apostle Paul reminds the Ephesian believers (as well as us today) that they were once dead in their transgressions and sins as they lived their lives by the standards of the world, the world where Satan abides and works within the hearts of those who live separate from the Lord and His word, those considered “the disobedient”. All sinners are counted in this number. No one is exempt.

Indeed, all Christians once lived as non-believers still live, rejecting the notion of God or Jesus while seeking to gratify the cravings of the flesh which we know is code for gratifying one’s sinful impulses. This life is all about someone wanting to satisfy what they want. There is no consideration of what God wants. None. And as we see, there are consequences for such a decision to remain a member of the spiritual walking dead that place their heart’s affection and mind’s attention on following personal desires and thoughts.

For those who choose to continue to live separate from their Maker and Master as well as His Son who was sent to bring eternal life to the spiritual walking dead, they are deserving of the wrath of God by nature, the omnipotent God who despises sin and will bring destruction on it and anyone practicing it.

Yes, billions of people in our world walk around every day, looking as alive as anyone else when the reality is that they are dead people walking. For minus Jesus, their destiny is eternal damnation and torment.

If this describes you today, I encourage you to immediately make the choice to believe in Jesus as Savior and assure yourself of becoming an heir to the Kingdom of God (aka Heaven). It’s one decision you will never regret.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
