The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
That power is the same as the mighty strength He exerted when He raised Christ from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.
Ephesians 1:19b-21
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
There is a lot of power in the world.
Major nations are led by people placed in high positions of authority, often over populations numbering in the millions.
Mighty storms rage in the way of tornadoes and hurricanes, ravaging and destroying anything in its path.
Military forces in countries often have missiles in their arsenals that hold the potential to obliterate whatever they strike, to include entire cities.
Yes, there are plenty of examples of extremely powerful people and things today but here’s the thing.
None of them come close to the power possessed by God, the One who possesses infinite strength.
This is a God who parted a mighty sea and suspended the halves so His people could pass through on dry land.
It’s the God who rained down manna and quail from the heavens to feed His people as they were on their way through the wilderness to Canaan, the land God promised to His people.
It’s the God who launched burning sulfur down on the sinful cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, annihilating both locales and all the people within.
And it was the God who made the heavens and earth from the very beginning. Everything existed and still exists through the power of His hand.
As we see within the latter verses of Ephesians, chapter 1, the Apostle Paul wants the Christian believers in Ephesus to remember the power of God, a power that brings hope for His people. This hope bred by God’s strength can be found at the empty tomb where Jesus was resurrected by His Father on the third day after His crucifixion. The same resurrection power will also raise all Jesus believers from the grave at the time God will appoint.
Those believers will leave this earth to inhabit a new one created by, you guessed it, the power of God. They will ascend to abide in their new home forever and the power they ascend with will be the same power that God used when He brought Christ to Heaven and placed Him in authority over all of creation (Acts 1:9). This fulfilled what Jesus said when He delivered His Great Commission:
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.” Matthew 28:18
In other words, the very power of God the Father was also found, and still is found, in His Son.
Friends, we serve a God and Savior who possess boundless strength and might, so much so that there isn’t anything they can’t do. Let us stand in awe of them both and give thanks that they are with us and for us.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
