The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive.

1 Corinthians 10:23

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

People in our world today conduct themselves in “anything goes” fashion. On any one given day, you can read about someone doing something that is outlandish, often times immoral as well, and no one seems to raise any issue with it. In fact, if you do raise an issue with it, then you will often times find yourself under attack for speaking out. The implication is that you should keep your mouth shut and mind your own business.

In looking at our scripture passage today, a single verse from 1 Corinthians 10, we see where this “anything goes” way of living existed in biblical times as well. It obviously was a real problem within the church in Corinth where believers held to the view that they had “the right to do anything”.

So who or what is the voice of reason in the world, past or present, the one who instruct us so that we can live in a society based on decent and honorable values, a society where we behave civilly, honoring and respecting one another?

Maybe the answer is really at the root of the problem. Maybe the problem is that we haven’t had a reliable, trusted voice of reason to guide us in the right ways.

Or maybe, just maybe, we have had a trusted voice of reason but we have chosen to shun it.

I am in complete belief that it is the latter and I say this because God has been in existence since the very dawning of mankind. He is perfectly good and right, therefore everything He says is good and right,

The scriptures are God’s words to His people. They direct and guide a person in the way that they should live so that their life is good and right. And here’s one thing you find out right away.

With God, it’s not “anything goes”, not even close. For when we are following His guidance, there are limits.

Consider the famous Ten Commandments, for example. People who don’t even profess a belief in God usually know of them.

When you look at these commandments, we find God putting standards in place that dictate what we shouldn’t do. In other words, there is behavior that is far from permissible or constructive in nature.

We’re not to worship other gods or idols. We’re not to dishonor our parents. We’re not permitted to commit murder or steal or commit adultery. We’re even forbidden from coveting things that another person has or giving false testimony against another person.

When we follow the Lord’s ways, we find there are limits but we shouldn’t begrudge this truth. Rather, we should embrace it and give thanks for our Lord not only cares about who we are as His people but He wants us all to live in a society where we can be blessed, blessed by Him and blessed by one another as we live by His will and way.

In today’s scripture verse, the apostle Paul is making sure the Corinthian Christians know that for them, anything does not go. Rather, they need to focus on their God who provided this bit of wisdom through Solomon in the Book of Proverbs:

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
