The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you. But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

1 Corinthians 11:2-3

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

In society, we like to use the word “head” to describe someone in ultimate authority.

A head chef would the one in charge of all the preparation and cooking of meals, supervising the cooks under them

A head of human resources (or HR) would be responsible for the administration of all human resource policies as it applies to employees in the agency or company they work for.

In sports, like football, the head coach is the one who runs the team, making sure his assistant coaches are carrying out what he expects and holding his players accountable for their play on the field.

The person at the head is in charge and those under their purview are subordinate to them. That’s the point that translates over to our two verses found at the start of 1 Corinthians, chapter 11. Look again at those words now:

I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you. But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. Vv 2-3

Here we find Paul reminding the Corinthian Christians that there is a spiritual hierarchy that they are under as Jesus believers. And as we see, even Jesus answers to someone for at the top of the organizational chart for Christians is God. He is the ultimate Head of all things as He is the Maker and Master of all creation.

Next, we find Jesus, God’s one and only Son who God delegated authority to. We learn this at the very start of Jesus’ Great Commission given to His disciples before He ascended to sit at His Father’s right hand. Here’s what He proclaimed:

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.” Matthew 28:18

Jesus received that authority from someone because He said it was given to Him. In our two verses today, we are reminded that God was the Giver because He is the head of Christ.

So God is the head and Jesus is the second in command. This leaves all the rest of mankind who are subordinate to Jesus but note that there’s yet one more level of hierarchy within the framework of mankind, one more matter of the head, and this is the authority of man over woman.

This is a non-negotiable Biblical principle, one in direct conflict with the world’s view on the matter. This is why Christians may be in the world but they are not to be of it. Therefore, their obedience to the scriptures is going to take them in a different direction with a distinctive difference of viewpoint.

But here’s the thing.

There’s only one viewpoint that counts and that’s the viewpoint of God, the Head over all things.

This God made everything we know and when we go back to the story of creation we learn that man was made first and it remained that way until God decided it wasn’t good for His created man to be alone and so He made a woman from the rib of the first man. In other words, the first woman owes her creation to God and a part of the first man.

God made man first and then made him the head of the woman. It was true from the very beginning of creation and it will always be.

It’s not our place to question. It definitely is our place to honor God’s authority and the way He has arranged other authority within His kingdom here on earth. He doesn’t just expect obedience, He demands it.

Tomorrow, we’ll look at a second matter of the head, this time more figuratively and physically than spiritually. I hope you’ll come back to read it then.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
