The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.
1 Corinthians 10:24
This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
What are the indicators you look for to consider whether or not a person is good or not?
Someone might answer the question by saying politeness and respectfulness.
Another individual might see a good person as someone who doesn’t break the rules, someone who always seems to choose to do the right thing.
Yet another might see honesty, trustworthiness, and reliability as the primary qualities of a good person.
Ask the question and you will receive a lot of different viewpoints but really when it comes down to it, as in so many other instances, the only perspective that really matters is what God’s word has to say about being a good person. And in today’s single scripture verse from our continued study of 1 Corinthians 10, we get a glimpse of what God-directed goodness looks like. Look again at verse 24 again here:
No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.
As we process these dozen words, we need to remember who Paul was writing to. His target audience was the Christians in the church of Corinth. They were the ones who were being told to discard their own needs and exchange them for the good of others.
In other words, the road to becoming a good person is one paved in humility, compassion, and self sacrifice.
Need a role model for this kind of living?
We need look no further than Jesus, the One who was perfectly good and therefore the One we need to impersonate and imitate as we carry out our own lives.
In Jesus, we see the proper good, the kind of good that God desires. It’s the kind of good that guides a person to a place where they display no hesitation to put their own desires aside in order to meet the needs of others. It’s a kind of good that causes a person to never be too busy to help someone. And it’s a kind of good that leads a person to be willing to die in order to save another.
Want to be truly good?
Live your life in the way Jesus did and know that you’ll be behaving in a way that is ultimately pleasing to God.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
