The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
“What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?”
Romans 8:31-32
This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Life has more than its share of worries, doesn’t it?
I think anyone who has lived awhile can attest to that.
Family, work, health, money, home, relationships, and so on and so forth. Any one of them can bring us to a place of anxiety but more often than not, we find combinations of stressors assailing us at any one time.
This is why it’s critical that we do something about the matter because when we allow these bothers to go unchecked, bad things start to happen for they take a toll on our physical and, particularly, mental well being.
So what do we do? What actions can we take to offset the effects of life’s challenges?
Well, for starters, we should be turning to the word of the Lord for strength, assurance, and guidance, and we couldn’t find a better two verses than the ones we have at the center of today’s message. Look again at these classic words from the Apostle Paul as he writes to the Romans:
“What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?” Romans 8:31-32
Did you catch the operational question here?
“If God is for us, who can be against us?”
How would you answer that question?
What problem or issue are you dealing with that is greater than God?
Go ahead, I’ll wait.
You see if we’re honest here then we have to remain silent in light of these questions for the God of all things, the One who created everything and now reigns supreme over that creation, is with and for you, me, and every single person who lives, now and forever. He has no rival and therefore, no one or no thing can stand against Him.
So why do we worry? And I wonder how God feels when we do? I mean, how insulting is it that we would not just trust Him completely and not be anxious about anything?
Friends, God has shown us just how “with us” He is through the good news of the Gospel. For as Paul highlights so well, the Lord was willing to surrender His one and only Son so we wouldn’t find ourselves separated from Him by sin. He wanted to be with us and for us, not just now but forever. He has fully made His commitment known. All we need to do is trust in Him.
God wants the best for us in accordance with His will and way. He knows the plans He has for us and each and every day, we get to see those plans unfold. He has purposed us to do great things in His name if we would just submit to Him and allow His direction to guide our steps.
And therein is the key here to overcoming our worries. We simply need to give them over to the One who is capable to taking care of them in His perfect way and in His perfect time.
So instead of allowing stress to rule your life, constantly disturbed by your troubles, stop and remember that God is with you and for you, and there isn’t anything He can’t handle. It was true in Paul’s day and it remains true today.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
