The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
“For from Him and through Him and for Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen.”
Romans 11:36
This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and we couldn’t ask for a better verse from the scriptures to help us prepare our hearts for this special day that the last verse of Romans, chapter 11.
I say this because Thanksgiving is a day centered on gratitude, gratitude for all we have. It’s a day to count our blessings and in the four prior messages in this series, we have firmly established that those blessings come from God and God alone, the divine Giver of every good and perfect gift. Indeed, all we know and all we have are due to our amazing Lord.
This is the truth that we find Paul sharing in verse 36. There he makes sure his readers know that everything starts with God and God alone. Let’s break down the verse into its four major proclamations and how they help us enter into Thanksgiving with the proper mindset.
1. For from Him are all things.
This is getting us back to Genesis and the “in the beginning” part of our creation story. It was God from the start and all things have existed and still exist because of Him and Him alone. As we give thanks on the holiday centered on thanksgiving then we know we are to give all our thanks to God, our amazing Lord and the sole Giver of everything.
2. For through Him are all things.
We all have gained so much in life and while it may have appeared that those gains came through ourselves or someone else, the truth of the matter is that God has ordained all events that have blessed us in some way. For all things run through our amazing Lord as He provides us with every good and perfect gift from above (James 1:17).
3. For Him are all things.
Our amazing Lord creates all things and therefore all things belong to the Creator. Additionally, every good and perfect gift given to created things by God is granted for a reason. There is always a purpose, an end result that God hopes to achieve through blessing His creation as He does. In other words, the blessings that God provides serve to ensure that He is honored so that the focus is always reflected back on the Giver. And this leads to Paul’s final proclamation:
4. To Him be the glory forever! Amen.
To receive glory is to be in the spotlight with all attention given to the glory receiver. Unfortunately, many people seek to glorify themselves instead of God, the One who made them and then granted them the gifts and opportunities to gain success in life.
When we truly see God for who He is, the amazing Lord through which all things are from, all things are through, and all things are in, then we will see Him as the only One who is worthy of being glorified in life and we will always pay the proper tribute to Him, not just on Thanksgiving but every day we’re blessed with.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
