The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
“Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.”
Romans 8:31-32
This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
The scriptures are full of good news. It’s why reading the Bible is such an amazing joy.
This chapter of Romans, chapter 8, is chocked full of good news statements and I guess that’s why it is one of my favorite New Testament chapters outside of the Gospels.
Yesterday, we were reminded that God is for us and with us, and with this truth in place, it is impossible for anything or anyone to stand against us. What a blessed assurance this is as we face a multitude of problems in life. It sets us free from worry and allows us to stand firm in bold confidence and faith in the Lord who can do all things, the Lord that has no rival.
As we shift to verses 31 and 32 today, we receive more words of encouragement that we can celebrate. For if no one can stand against us with God by our side and our salvation secured through His Son Jesus, then that means that no one can condemn us either. No one can bring any charge against those who God has chosen.
These words take us back to the introduction of this chapter where we read this in verse 1:
“…there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
No condemnation means no condemnation. Before we accepted Jesus as Savior, we all were condemned to Hell, in opposition to God and worthy of the fullest extent of His judgment and wrath. But through our choice to be saved through Christ, we gained the blessing of justification because Jesus paid the sin debt we owed, purchasing our pardon.
Need an illustration?
Picture yourself at the point of God’s final judgment. As a sinner unworthy of God’s glory, you are destined to eternal damnation and torment with no form of defense for yourself.
Just as God is about to render His guilty verdict, Jesus emerges on the scene and intercedes for you, informing His Father that He has already paid the penalty you deserved. And with that, you are set free and welcomed into the kingdom of the Lord Most High. Your slate has been wiped clean and once dirty, contaminated spiritual self has been washed clean by the precious blood of Jesus.
It’s a scene of beauty and the ultimate good news. Destined for Hell, we are rescued and delivered by Christ Jesus, the Savior of the world sent by God to save us through a deep love and mercy we’ll never comprehend.
Yes, God is with us and for us, now and forever, because of His redeeming work of Jesus at Calvary’s cross and His subsequent resurrection from the grave. Just as death was not the end for Jesus, so too is not the end for anyone who believes in Him.
And that is the ultimate good news called the Gospel.
Thanks be to God for the gift of His Son.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
