The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

“For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on Him, for, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’”

Romans 10:12-13

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Have you ever seen someone who was drowning, maybe on a television show or movie, or maybe you have seen it in person or experienced it yourself?

It’s terrifying.

A person fights to keep their head above the water because if they don’t water fills their lungs and it’s over. They are destined for doom unless they are rescued by someone, pulled from sinking below the water’s surface.

This is the very reason why we see lifeguards at pools and on beaches. They are there to keep an eye out for potential trouble in the water, always at the ready to save someone from drowning.

We can translate this to spiritual significance by looking at any body of water as sin. And since all are sinners that fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), there is always the threat of sinking deeper and deeper into the depths of iniquity, positioned at the entrance to the pit of Hell.

In this place where all people find themselves, rescue is needed, a divine rescue that can only come from one source, our Lord Jesus Christ.

Need a scriptural example?

Consider this encounter between Peter and Jesus who was walking on the water to the boat Peter was on:

Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw Him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.

But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

“Lord, if it’s You,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to You on the water.”

“Come,” He said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” He said, “why did you doubt?”

And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.  Matthew 14:25-32

Peter was doing great. He was willing to step out of the boat and onto the water, believing he could walk upon it like Jesus was. And he did, that is until he allowed his faith to dwindle as the wind blew around him. At that moment, when he allowed his confidence in his Lord to fade, he began to sink into the lake and fearing it was the end, he did the only thing he could. He cried out for Jesus to save him and his request was granted. Peter was rescued by his Savior from pending death.

Friends, this is an illustration of what Jesus does time after time after time as sinners begin to sink in deeper and deeper in their transgressions. For anyone who calls on His name will be rescued and saved.

As we see in our two verses for today from Romans 10, Paul reinforces this truth as he addresses the Jews and Gentiles in Rome. Look again at his words here:

“For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on Him, for, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’” Vv. 12-13

Note there wasn’t any preferential lifesaving when it came to Jesus. At the heart of the new covenant between God and His people was the truth that Jesus was the Lord of all, whether Jew or Gentile. He would richly bless anyone who called on His name with the salvation that was only found in Him.

In the end translation, Jesus is our great Rescuer, the One who pulls us out of the depths of sin and sets our feet on solid ground, on the path of righteousness that leads to the eternal life of Heaven.

Thanks be to God for the gift of His Son!

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
