The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
As water reflects
the face, so one’s life reflects the heart.
Proverbs 27:19
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to
God.
I think it’s safe to say we
all have limitations. There are just things we can’t do, right?
Some things apply
universally to all but sometimes limitations apply to some people more than
others depending on the limitation we’re talking about. For example, I can’t
dunk a basketball. I just don’t have the height to do it. Others who are taller
find that it’s very easy. And although I can’t dunk a basketball, I can write
and sing very well, something those basketball dunkers might have trouble with.
We all have things we can do. We all have things we can’t.
One thing we all cannot do
is see ourselves from the neck up without some kind of help. Ditto for much of your
back. It’s true, isn’t it? Maybe you haven’t thought about it before but give
it a try someday. You’ll find out real quick that you simply can’t do it
without aid.
Indeed, the only way we get
a chance to see ourselves in places where our sight is restricted is by using
something that provides us a reflection. Like a mirror or piece of glass or
even water when it is calm and glassy.
This matter of reflection
revealing things that are out of sight is at the heart of Solomon’s proverb for
today, the 19th verse of Proverbs, Chapter 27. Look again at these words:
As water reflects the face, so one’s life
reflects the heart.
The face we can’t see on
our own is revealed by the reflection that water provides. Likewise, the way
one lives reveals the heart concealed within, the heart that is out of sight of
everyone, even the person who has it in their body. No human being can see a
heart, their own or another’s, without some form of aid but they certainly can
gauge the heart’s condition through the words and actions of the person they’re
assessing. A sin-filled heart will produce transgression in speech and
behavior. Conversely, a righteous hearts produces righteous talk and conduct.
That brings me to the question
I believe God’s word poses for us today.
What does your life reflect
about the condition of your heart? Do people see you as a person who is pure in
heart or polluted?
Maybe you’ve become good at
hiding the true nature of your heart. Perhaps you have allowed wickedness to
gain such a foothold in your life that deception has become part of your DNA.
You’re good at putting up a false front so people see one thing but it is a
fake reflection of what is truly in your heart. Your life is a falsehood when
you’re around some people but in the right sinful situation, you drop your mask
to show your true self, to show the true nature of your heart.
Maybe this describes you or
someone you know. If so, God’s word has the following warning for you:
He (the Lord) will bring to light
what is hidden in darkness and
will expose the motives of the heart. 1 Corinthians 4:5
We may have limitations in
what we can see but the Lord has no such problem. He sees everything including
our innermost parts which include the heart. A sinful heart, full of wickedness
and evil, will be exposed no matter how well a person tries to conceal it. You
may fool a man or a woman but you will never fool the Lord. Rather, He will
show you just how much of a fool you really are for forsaking Him and His
righteousness for Satan and his sin offerings.
In the end translation,
trying to hide anything is a fruitless endeavor for the Lord will bring to light
anything orchestrated by a dark heart. Nothing is hidden from His sight.
Nothing.
What does He see when He
looks inside your heart today?
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
