THE UNKNOWN OF TOMORROW, THE OPPORTUNITY OF TODAY

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

Proverbs 27:1

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

What’s going to happen tomorrow? Can you tell me?

I’m not asking you to tell me what you think your schedule will be for tomorrow or what you believe will happen. I’m asking you to tell me beyond a shadow of a doubt what will happen tomorrow.

I’m betting you can’t do it.

It’s true, isn’t it? We have no control over the things that often happen in our world that throw our plans for life upside down. Life happens and this is why it’s so hard to even start to predict the future. There are just too many variables in play that can lay waste to our best laid plans.

And we don’t even know if tomorrow will come, do we? Not trying to go morbid on you but there is no guarantee how long any of us will live in our life here on earth. We’re not immortal and we’re not bulletproof. We are living but each day might be our last. That’s just the honest truth of the matter, a truth that would bring more people to seek their salvation in Christ if they truly considered it with any sense of seriousness.

You see, if we accept Christ Jesus as our Savior, then death loses its sting. We realize that there is a much better life than this world has to offer in our future and we are set free to live and love and learn while in service of the Lord and His will and way. We need not worry about what’s ahead for as Jesus tells us in His teaching during the Sermon on the Mount, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own (Matthew 6:34).” Solomon in our proverb for today preceded the words of Jesus with this wise saying:

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring. Proverbs 27:1

Each day has trouble we have to deal with, plenty that requires our attention. But each day also is chocked full of opportunity, opportunity to love and care for others and opportunity to either start a relationship with Christ or grow stronger in Him as we seek to become like Him. We have the opportunity to bring others to their faith and trust in Christ by sharing His salvation promise with others and we have the opportunity to allow others to get a glimpse of Jesus through modeling the way we live after His life. If we truly zoom in on the matters of today, we’ll see that every encounter with another is an opportunity to establish relationship and show the light of Christ to them. Remember we are to be the light in the world that leads others to the One who is the Light.

Yes, every day is full of opportunity and we should intensely value every minute that we have in it. At the end of the day, we should be able to kneel before our Lord and take inventory of all the lives we have touched in a special way, giving thanks to Him for placing us in those opportunities where we were able to make a difference in the life of another in some way through showing them His light and love shining through us. If we do it right, we will see every day as special and a blessing before we lay ourselves to rest. And if the Lord grants us a tomorrow, it simply becomes a new today, a day with countless new opportunities awaiting us to experience and be blessed by as we once again live in every way for Christ Jesus.

Don’t worry about the unknown of tomorrow. Rather, revel in the opportunity of today and let Jesus lead you to and through those opportunities. You’ll never be sorry you did.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
