STABILITY

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

When a country is rebellious, it has many rulers, but a ruler with discernment and knowledge maintains order.

Proverbs 28:2

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Consider all the nations of our world today. Some function well day in and day out. You never hear about them in the news. Others however are anything but functional but rather dysfunctional. It seems you never cease to hear about these countries and that would include my nation, the United States of America.

So what separates these nations? What makes one nation more stable than another?

Well, this isn’t a new question for the matter of different nations and the way they function ranges back to the days of early Israel who had their own internal turmoil at one point. You may remember the matter of the Divided Kingdom. Prior to this, Solomon wrote some words that seem to be almost prophetic in light of what was ahead for the nation he ruled. Look at these words from verse 2 of the 28th Chapter of Proverbs:

When a country is rebellious, it has many rulers, but a ruler with discernment and knowledge maintains order.

What is the word of God telling us about the way to stability and order within a nation?

It comes from a ruler who leads with discernment and knowledge, a ruler who governs with wisdom.

Go back to this core verse in Proverbs and you’ll remember this fundamental principle when it comes to the matter of knowledge:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7

One cannot start being knowledgeable until they respect the Lord God Almighty, the Maker of heaven and earth and everything in both. The genesis of all things began with Him including wisdom and knowledge and discernment. So if a nation is going to function with order, it has to have a leader who trusts in the Lord more than themselves because they respect the Lord and see Him as the sole source of discernment and knowledge. This leads to two other core verses from the Book of Proverbs:

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

At the earliest time as King of Israel, Solomon had an encounter with the Lord that went like this:

Solomon was given a chance to ask for anything from the Lord. Seriously, the Lord was going to give Solomon whatever he wanted. Anything.

Did Solomon ask for power? No.

Did Solomon ask for wealth and riches? No.

Did Solomon ask for greater power and more nations to rule over? No.

He didn’t ask for any of the things that a person may have associated with a great ruler in that day. Instead, he simply asked for a “discerning heart to govern Your people and to distinguish between right and wrong” (1 Kings 3:9).

Wow. Given the chance to have ANYTHING, Solomon chose a discerning heart to rule properly and righteously. He wasn’t willing to lean on his own understanding. Rather, he was willing to fully submit himself in trust to the Lord so that his paths, the ways he traveled as king, would be straight.

Friends, are we hearing the Lord speaking to us today? Oh if only the leaders of the world would pay heed to the scriptures. Can you see how our world would be such a better place? Can you see why we are in the mess we are in within so many nations?

For if a nation and its people want stability, then their leader needs to be someone who first places their faith, trust, and hope in the Lord, seeking Him for knowledge, discernment, and wisdom so that everything that is done is done right and righteously, pleasing in the Lord’s sight because all actions are taken to glorify and magnify Him and Him alone.

Let our prayer for all nations be for leaders to be appointed such as this.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
