HUMBLE WORSHIP

"Whenever the living beings give glory and honor and thanks to the One sitting on the throne, the One who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down and worship the One who lives forever and ever. And they lay their crowns before the throne and say, ‘You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For You created everything and it is for your pleasure that they exist and were created.’" Revelation 4:9-11

In today’s scripture we observe more response from those who are in the presence of God in the throne room. The living beings gave glory, honor and thanks to God as He sat on the throne proclaiming His majesty all day and night. The twenty four elders then responded by "fall(ing) down and worship(ping)" God.

The response of the elders highlights how we should conduct ourselves while in the presence of our Almighty, Omnipotent God. We are expected to be in a constant spirit of worship and not just token worship but all consuming, passionate, worship. The elders fell before God prostrate around His throne. They realized that they were not even worthy to stand in His presence. And they fully understood the depth of His power.

Question: Is your worship simply a matter of going through the motions, performing in concert with some preconceived script? Or is your worship heartfelt, devotional, and humble? It’s that last word humble that we seem to have the worst time with.

So why is humility such a problem for us? Well, the world defines humility as a weakness and people simply don’t want to be considered weak. So they turn away from humility, unwilling to swallow their pride...more concerned about how the world will judge them than the Almighty God who made them. We only need to turn to God’s Only Son Jesus to see consistent humility as applied to living. And as Christians, aren’t we supposed to be modeling Christ?

Question: How well are you modeling Jesus in your every day Christian living? Do others get a glimpse of who Jesus is by examining the way you live? How do you think Jesus feels when we were not willing to sacrifice for Him, even though He sacrificed everything for us?

Keep in mind that through Jesus and His resurrection, we were all made heirs to the Kingdom of Heaven. And as heirs, God gives our crowns of life to wear in glory but He is still the Supreme King. This is why the elders could not wear their crowns in His presence. Instead, they laid them before the throne and acknowledged God as the only One "worthy…to receive glory and honor and power." And so should we.

So worship God without ceasing with passion and humility…a humility that will always drive you to a place uncrowned and prostrate before the Lord. For truly, He and only He is worthy of our praise.

In Christ,

Mark
