The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

“Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.”

Matthew 24:32-35

“Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door. Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.”

Mark 13:28-31

He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.”

Luke 21:29-31

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

As this new year begins, we’re in the heart of winter here in Virginia Beach. I haven’t had to mow the yard for several months now, the few trees we have on the property have lost their leaves, and the lovely flowers my wife plants in her garden beds have given way to the cold and died off. And yet, soon all these things will come back to life and offer signs that warmer weather has arrived with spring with summer just ahead on the horizon.

Indeed, there has been an eternal seasonal cycle of life and death within nature that has existed since the beginning of creation. It has not yet passed away yet but a day is coming when it will. For when Jesus returns - something we have been focused on this over the past eight days in the series, The Signs - earth as we know it will be no more. Ditto for the heavens that provide the seasonal changes as the sun transits the globe in its annual orbital process. Nothing that we know will sustain except for the God who is the Maker of all things, His Son Jesus who was placed by His Father in authority over everything in heaven and on earth, all who placed their belief in Jesus as Savior (aka Christians), and as we see in today’s scripture passages, the word of our Lord which will endure forever.

The focus here is on the words of Jesus and just as He hasn’t passed away and is very much alive, His words live on with Him.

Just as the fig tree twigs and leaves signal summer’s coming, so too would the signs Jesus spoke of indicate His pending arrival. And it was just like Jesus to tell a good parable to drive a point home. He had a way of using his everlasting words to send everlasting messages, messages that transcend ages and generations. We’re proof of this today as we read words that were spoken by our Savior well over 2,000 years ago.

That’s what makes the scriptures so special and such a blessing to have for study. Eternal truths that provide eternal guidance so that people might gain eternal life through a God and Savior who are the source of all eternity.

Thanks be to God for the gift of His Son Jesus, the One who brings us the opportunity to live forever with Him and the Father who sent Him to save us.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
