The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ He promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word, the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

2 Peter 3:3-7

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Things as we know it aren’t going to last forever.

Look up into the sky toward the heavens. A time is coming when it will be no more. Ditto for all the trees, bushes, plants, and grass, and the animals that live within them.

All the seas will disappear along with the aquatic creatures that live in the watery depths.

The very ground that serves as the foundation for all businesses, places of recreation, and dwellings will give way, gone for all eternity.

Yes, a day is coming when the earth and heavens will pass away, the day when Jesus returns to judge all creation, sending all who refused to believe in Him and their chief master, Satan, into the fires of damnation and Hell for an everlasting existence there. On this same day, all Christ believers will be ushered into their new eternal life with God and Jesus, abiding within the new heavens and earth in the New Jerusalem (Revelation 20:10-15, 21:1-3).

I can say all this because the Bible lays it all out. It is a collection of 66 books that contain within them perfect truth, perfect because every word within those books is breathed out from a perfect God (2 Timothy 3:16-17). All one has to do to accept this is believe in God, the Maker and Master of all created things.

Unfortunately, since the institution of His Word, people have chosen to reject it and by doing so, reject its Author. Worse yet, not only have people willingly chosen to not believe the scriptures but they have taken their insolence to another level, actually mocking and making fun of the Lord and anyone who places their trust in Him. There’s a dictionary word for these people. It’s the word “scoffer” and it’s to this audience of the disrespectful and abhorrent that we find God speaking to in the early verses 2 Peter, chapter 3. Look again at those words here:

Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ He promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word, the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. Vv.3-7

Now, while scoffers have existed for the ages, here we find God addressing those who will come forward “in the last days”, sarcastically saying the following, most probably to the Christians of that time:

“Where is this ‘coming’ He promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”

It’s obvious here that the unbelieving ridiculers feel totally emboldened to deride and poke fun at the Lord because they have no respect for Him or the Word He provided, a Word that details His past and future work. And since they give no deference to the scriptures, they would “deliberately forget” that the very “heavens” they lived underneath had come “into being” through the very Word of the God they dishonored. This would go as well for the earth they stood upon, an “earth” that “was formed out of water and by water”, the same waters that God used to deluge and destroy all the people of the earth with the exception of eight people on the ark that Noah constructed.

It was by the proven power of His Words in the past that would validate His promises about the future, promises that “the present heavens and earth” would be “reserved for fire” on the “day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly” (refer back to the aforementioned verses from the Book of Revelation).

As sure as there will be people who will give God the kind of highest admiration and esteem that He and only He deserves, there will also be scoffers, fools who would choose to insult and oppose the One who possesses infinite power, the One who will not be mocked (Galatians 6:7).

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
