The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be?

You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with His promise we are looking forward to a new Heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.

So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with Him.

2 Peter 3:11-14

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

A day is coming, at a time only God knows, when the current Heaven and earth will be destroyed. It will be the day when Jesus returns again, passing judgment on Satan, his minions, and anyone who chose to not to believe in Jesus. They all will be cast into the fires of Hell before the new Heaven and earth emerge with the new holy city of Jerusalem descending from the heavens, the new dwelling place for God and all Christian saints, those who are His children.

The scriptures are clear about what’s to come and so we know how things are going to be but in light of that, how are Christian believers to live in the here and now?

As we approach the end of 2 Peter, chapter 3, we find Peter answering this question as he wrote to his brother and sister believers who were “exiles scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia” (1 Peter 1:1). His words inform us as well. Here’s what he had to say:

Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be?

You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with His promise we are looking forward to a new Heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.

So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with Him. 2 Peter 3:11-14

Through His Word, God has called all Christian believers to be holy as He is holy (1 Peter 1:15-16). This simply means that Jesus followers are required to set themselves apart from the world and its ways. To that end, the Holy Spirit, received at the moment a Christian placed their belief in Jesus, is ever leading them toward the holiness that the Lord desires, a process known as sanctification. Each day is to be seen as a day to be more holy than the one before as the believer commits to carry out the right and righteous will of God, a right and righteous will that creates the divine environment we need to become more like Jesus in every way.

After all, isn’t that the main goal for all Christians...to be Christ-like in every thought, word, and deed?

As we see in today’s scripture passage, Jesus believers are to “make every effort to be found spotless, blameless, and at peace” with God at the time of Jesus’ second coming, the end which is really just the beginning of an eternal life in glory with the Father and the Son forever. Within this day and every day forward, let us be immersed in the Word and submit to the guiding of the Holy Spirit so we can be the people the Lord wants us to be when He ushers us into the majesty of Heaven forever.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
