For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a Lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through Him, you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

1 Peter 1:18-21

There is only one way to Heaven, one doorway to an eternal life of glory and that is through Jesus Christ. He tells us as much in John’s Gospel:

Jesus said..., “I assure you: I am the Door of the sheep...I am the Door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture.” John 10:7, 9 HCSB

He also said this in the fourteenth chapter of the same Gospel:

“I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” v.6

The scriptures are clear that Jesus is the only way one can gain salvation and gain the guarantee of Heaven where they can abide forever with their Heavenly Father. All they need to do is simply believe in Christ as Savior (John 3:16).

Did you catch that?

There is no price one has to pay to be saved. It is a free gift from God through His Son extended through grace and mercy to sinners who are relieved of a sin debt that they could never repay, a sin debt that Jesus has already covered at the highest cost that being His own life.

Yes, we sinners here on earth who find themselves in enmity with the God who made them and destined for the sure everlasting damnation and torment found in Hell, we are given the free opportunity to get right with our Maker and Master by way of Jesus who purchased the pardon of everyone who places their trust in Him.

What does that pardon look like?

We get a glimpse in our verses for today from our continued study of 1 Peter. Here’s what we read in verses 18 through 21 of chapter 1:

For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a Lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through Him, you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

Note here the price paid for our salvation. It wasn’t done in material items that represented value like “silver or gold” because both combined couldn’t come close to matching the worth of God’s one and only Son. No, the only suitable payment for the sin atonement of all mankind, an “empty way of life handed down” from a family lineage that extends all the way back to Eden’s Garden, was the shedding of divine blood through the sacrifice of a perfect sinless human being and Jesus is the only one who ever was and will ever will be in this category.

It’s His “precious blood” that washes away the sin of a believer and makes him or her white as snow, blameless and pardoned before the Supreme God and Judge of creation. He, Jesus, brings us a faith and hope grounded in God and the redeeming covenant He established.

Friends, what a friend we have in Jesus who is the only One that can first save us and then usher us into the eternal life of glory He currently inhabits with God, His and our Heavenly Father. Join me every day in giving thanks for the purchasing of our pardon and rescue from spending forever in Hell.
