~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today is Father’s Day in America, a day to celebrate Dads, past and present.
I remember my father this day who entered into his eternal rest in Christ Jesus thirteen years ago. He raised me up to be a man with a strong work ethic and a heart to help others in need, character traits that still define me today. Maybe you are the same, remembering your Dad and things you saw in him that you have tried to emulate in your own life.
Now, as we consider our fathers today, it would be a huge oversight to not keep in mind that our very existence, and that includes the parents who helped make that possible, have our respective life opportunities because of a God who made us and formed us (Deuteronomy 32:6). In fact, our Heavenly Father is the best Dad ever and in this special message, I want to highlight this truth through the scriptures which affirm the distinguished greatness of God the Father. Consider these ten qualities He has:
1. God is love.
...anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 1 John 4:8
Fathers will only love their children as they should when they know God first because God is the epitome of perfect love.
2. God is faithful.
The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. 1 Corinthians 10:13
Children want their Dads to be there for them when needed and there is no greater model for faithfulness than what we find in God. People may fail us, even including earthly fathers, but God will never let us down.
3. God is light.
This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in Him at all. 1 John 1:5
This world can be a dark place for us at times and it should be an immense comfort to know that when we turn to our Heavenly Father, He will always shine His light into our dark places and show that He is with us.
4. God is the giver of perfect gifts.
Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father. James 1:17
Who doesn’t like to receive gifts?
I don’t know of many people who don’t and as we see in the scriptures, our God is a Father who always delivers good and perfect gifts from above.
5. God’s ways are perfect.
God’s way is perfect. Psalm 18:30
My biological father was a great man but he wasn’t any more perfect than you and I are. There has never been a perfect human father but my Heavenly Father God’s ways are perfect. He never errs and this I (and we) can always count on.
6. God is just.
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne. Psalm 89:14
All have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. We are a flawed people who need corrected just as when we were children and needed the discipline of our fathers and mothers. There could have been times when that discipline was unfair, because we already have established that parents aren’t perfect, but there is no imperfection in what our Heavenly Father decides to do. When He brings judgment upon us, we can be assured it is always warranted and imposed in such a way to bring us to a place where He wants us to be.
7. God is gracious, righteous, and full of compassion.
The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. Psalm 116:5
In regard to how our Father God treats us, we not only know He is perfectly right in all He chooses to do but that He exercises grace and compassion in how He deals with His children. We should never take this for granted.
8. God bears our burdens.
Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. Psalm 68:19
When we go through difficulties in life, and they will come, it’s great to have a Heavenly Father who is ready and able to bear our burdens, not just some of the time but daily. This will bring us a peace that the world knows nothing about when we trust Him with what we’re going through. The Bible tells us as much:
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
9. God holds our life in His hands.
For the life of every living thing is in His hand, and the breath of every human being. Job 12:10
My earthly father brought me into the world and raised me but after I struck out on my own as an adult, my life was no longer in his hands. Thankfully, I have been in the hands of my Father God since I gained life up to this very moment and I couldn’t be in a better place than that.
10. God didn’t wish for anyone to perish but to have the chance to live with Him forever.
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
...the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23
Our God is a God who saves; from the Sovereign Lord comes escape from death. Psalm 68:20
God loves His children. We have already established that as well some of the other qualities that make Him the best Dad ever but it’s important to note that not everyone is a child of His. For to truly be a part of His family, one first has to believe in His Son as Savior and in doing so, receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
You see, as sinners, every single person is separated from God because of their transgressions. Unaddressed, this separation leads to only one destination after death and that is the eternal torment and damnation of Hell.
God, the loving Lord that He is, didn’t wish for this to happen to anyone and so He sent His Son Jesus as a living, atoning sacrifice for the sins of all mankind. All one would have to do afterwards was simply believe in His Son as Savior and they wouldn’t perish but rather gain eternal life. It was a saving gift granted by the Father who grants perfect gifts from above, a gift that rescues and redeems a sinner from the everlasting Hell they were heading to.
Friends, today and every day, let us celebrate and honor the best Father and Dad anyone could ever have, the Lord God Almighty, for all we have read from the Word of God in this message and all that He is beyond that.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
