The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

He was faithful to the One who appointed Him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself.

Hebrews 3:2-3

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Keep your thoughts fixed on Jesus.

That was the powerful opening exhortation found in the first verse of Hebrews, chapter 3.

The words from the writer as he sought to instruct and inspire Jewish Christians also instruct and inspire us today as we face a world that offers up a buffet table of distractions used by our enemy, the devil, to redirect our attention from where it’s supposed to be.

As we move from the call to focus fully on the Savior, we find the author of this letter giving his readers good reason to do so. Look again at these words from verses 2 and 3:

He was faithful to the One who appointed Him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself.

Just as Jesus used Old Testament references to make points to an audience who were familiar with Israelite history and tradition, we find the writer of Hebrews using the same connections throughout his letter. At the end of chapter 2, we find him invoking the name of Abraham, revered as the father of the Jewish nation and here in chapter 3, Jesus is compared to Moses, the great leader who brought the Israelite people out of the clutches of Egyptian captivity and oppression through the power and assistance of God.

How did the author relate Jesus to Moses?

We read that it was in the matter of faithfulness.

He was faithful to the One who appointed Him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house.

At the burning bush, God revealed His purpose for Moses, tasking him with organizing the Israelite people and preparing them for escape and an exodus to Canaan, described by God as “the good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey” (Exodus 3).

It seemed like a harrowing task and Moses hardly felt qualified to do what God was asking him to do but he remained steadfast in his trust of God and His ability to do anything He promised. The Lord took care of the rest.

Similarly, Jesus was given a plan by His Father, a plan that involved Him faithfully submitting Himself to deliver all mankind from the oppression and captivity of sin. And like Moses, Jesus fully surrendered Himself to carry out what God wanted Him to do, trusting the outcome to Him. And His Father took care of the rest, richly rewarding His Son by giving Him total authority over all things in Heaven and on earth (Matthew 28:18). It was an honor from God solely awarded to Jesus, an honor that placed complete supremacy and sovereignty on the Savior of the world.

Today, Jesus is no different than he was in first century A.D. He is still perfectly faithful and entirely entitled to His place of eminent power and supreme dominion over all creation.

Let us ever fix our thoughts on Him as we offer up our worship and praise, thankful for His unmatched and unrivaled greatness.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
