The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 6:23
This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
There is power contained in the words we us. Unbelievable power. This is why we need to carefully choose the words we use because they have the might to build someone up but also to tear someone down. Words can destroy but they also can save.
In my opinion, there has never been a more potent collection of words than what we find in the Holy Bible for it’s there that we find the perfect Word of God. There is no other place where all words impact the receiver with absolute perfection.
What makes the scriptures even more incredible is that when we study it, we see where a single verse can contain astonishing clout in conveying wisdom and influence in one’s life. It’s not uncommon for a Christian believer to have a single verse that they have memorized because of the enormous meaning it holds for them. Here are a few of my favorites:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” Romans 12:1
There are really too many for me to list here and I’m sure you have your own single verses that have impacted you. If you would like, leave a comment to this devotion and share your verse with me and others.
Why am I going into this discussion about solitary Bible verses and their amazing effect on people?
Because today we are looking at one such verse, the final verse of Romans, chapter 5, a verse that speaks to the final outcome for all people and how it hinges on how they choose to believe. Look again at this verse here:
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23
Earlier in Romans, Paul shared this truth in one verse, ironically verse 23 of chapter 3:
“…all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
All have sinned and that means all. All people of the world are working in sin every day and without Jesus, they are earning their way to death. Such is the final outcome for a life laboring in wickedness and transgressions, a final outcome where death is not the end but rather an introduction to a second everlasting life of damnation and torment.
God didn’t wish for anyone to die into a life of suffering that would never end and so He provided a gift to His people, a chance to change the final outcome to the best life ending ever.
That gift was eternal life through His Son Jesus and all a person needs to do to gain it is believe in Jesus as Savior.
That’s it.
Believe in Jesus and your final outcome is eternal life, abiding with God and Jesus forever in a world void of sin, suffering, affliction, or heartbreak. Joy, peace, and love will be in never ending quantity as you enjoy a perpetual rest with all the others who chose Christ over hell.
One strong verse. Twenty words that hold the key to whether a person experiences anguish or glory when this worldly life is over.
As you look at your life today, where are you destined?
I pray this verse either validates the hope that you have in Christ or leads you to accept Jesus as Savior so to avoid the sure judgment and punishment ahead.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
