The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Woe to you, destroyer, you who have not been destroyed!

Woe to you, betrayer, you who have not been betrayed!

When you stop destroying, you will be destroyed; when you stop betraying, you will be betrayed.

Isaiah 33:1

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Has anyone ever wronged you in some way and it seemed as if they didn’t receive any consequence for their action? Maybe you have even witnessed that person do the same thing to another and not end up paying any price.

Even if you haven’t personally experienced any atrocities first-hand, I am sure you are aware of someone who has. Just a quick look at the news every day and we find no shortage of wrongs committed one against the other.

Innocent people are murdered in cold blood; even children are not spared. Sometimes the killing and destruction can wipe out entire communities as massacres are carried out one group against another.

People perpetuate deceit against others to try and get an advantage or intentionally harm someone either competitively, emotionally, financially, or all of the above.

Destruction and dishonesty are far from 21st century phenomena. For one need only study the bible for a short while to see how prevalent both were in Old and New Testament times. One such place we can find this matter addressed point blank in regard to the penalties levied against the destroyer and betrayer is in Old Testament and the 33rd chapter of the Book of Isaiah. Look again at these words now:

Woe to you, destroyer, you who have not been destroyed!

Woe to you, betrayer, you who have not been betrayed!

When you stop destroying, you will be destroyed; when you stop betraying, you will be betrayed. vv. 1-2

Note here that the destroyer and betrayer will not escape sanction from the Lord God Almighty. Rather, each will face the same fate as they imparted on others, something we often refer to as the “what comes around, goes around” scenario but it could also be looked at through the lens of the biblical principle of “you reap what you sow”.

Bring destruction on someone and you can expect to be destroyed yourself or, put in another way, sow destruction and you will reap it and heap it on yourself.

Betray someone and you can expect to be betrayed as well. In other words, sowing betrayal will reap betrayal on the betrayer.

Think about this when we consider other sinful behaviors we might adopt against another person.

Intentionally hurt someone physically or emotionally, or sow hurt, and you can expect to experience injury or reap it yourself.

Cheat someone and you can expect to be cheated too.

Fail to provide for someone you know has a need when you have the means to meet it and you will find your needs unmet when they arise.

You get the point, right? The Lord is telling us through these two opening verses of Isaiah, Chapter 33, that what comes around, goes around. When we do wrong against someone, we can expect a taste of our own medicine in return. I could go on and on with more examples but instead will give you just one more:

Turn from the Lord and you can expect He will turn from you, not forever but until you choose to return to Him in repentance and a willingness to make amends.

Let’s just make it easy on ourselves and the others we are sharing life with. Instead of sowing iniquity, let’s instead choose to sow righteousness instead by fully living in and of the Lord every day and apart from a world filled with sin. For when we sow righteousness, then we will reap righteousness and experience the joys of receiving goodness and love from those we associate ourselves with.

For when good goes around, it comes around back to us and this is the kind of life the Lord longs for everyone to have.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
