The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Of the greatness of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.

The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

Isaiah 9:7

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

What does it mean to do something with zeal?

Well, the dictionary gives us the following definition of the word “zeal”:

A great energy or enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause or an objective. Synonyms include passion, fervor, fire, devotion, eagerness, and intensity.

Why the question? Because the answers are critical to us getting a full understanding of the final scripture verse in this six part devotional series titled, “Given Unto Us”.

For God gave unto us, a world of human sinners, His one and only Son named Jesus, sending Him into the world through a virgin named Mary as a child who was destined to grow up and become the Savior of the world. This Son Jesus would come to bring us many things as God placed the government of mankind on His shoulders. He would become our wonderful Counselor, our mighty God who was one with His Father and empowered as such, our everlasting Father who parents us through this thing providing love and direction forever, and our Prince of peace who delivers solace and comfort to us no matter what life might bring our way.

In other words, we are blessed by the gift of Jesus, given unto us to save through the love of God who was not willing to see His people perish from their sins (John 3:16).

Yes, Jesus means everything to us because He is everything for us. And He doesn’t do it out of some sense of regretful obligation. No, He does everything with zeal, with an energy and eagerness to make a difference in our lives, with a devotion and passion born out of His deep affection for us, despite the sinners that we are. We know Jesus works with zeal because God’s word confirms it. Look at verse 7 from Isaiah, Chapter 9:

Of the greatness of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.

The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

Jesus proclaimed that all authority over heaven and earth had been given to Him by God the Father (Matthew 28:18) and with that He rules and reigns with an enthusiastic greatness over the kingdom of God. That excitement in governing will never end and indeed Jesus will return to earth again to judge all of humanity. In between that time, He offers us a devotional peace that is equally as great as His power and authority, a peace that Paul says is beyond understanding because no one in this world can bring the peace that Jesus can (Philippians 4:6-7) No one.

Yes, Jesus is all we have in life and He’s all we need. He is God’s greatest gift who does so much for us to include granting us victory over death and the grave out a sense of zeal as He reigns in righteousness and justice forever. As we live and love and learn alongside Him each and every day, let us do so with the same sense of passion and energy and intensity that defines who He is. For we will only show others a glimpse of the Savior Jesus – the wonderful Counselor, mighty God, everlasting Father, and Prince of peace – if we first live for Him and others will a sense of zeal, a zeal that will reveal the Lord God Almighty living and abiding within us.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
