The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs. The Teacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true.

The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails—given by one shepherd. Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them. Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body.

Ecclesiastes 12:9-12

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Today is the next to the last installment this devotional series titled, “Living This Thing Called Life” and the guidance from the word of God is arguably more important than any of the others we have received so far.

That guidance is simply to seek, receive, and embrace the wisdom of God.

Look at these verses from Ecclesiastes, Chapter 12:

Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs. The Teacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true.

The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails—given by one shepherd. Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them. Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body. (vv. 9-12)

The Teacher mentioned here is, of course, Solomon, identified in the very first verse of this book as the son of David. Given this, there should be no surprise about the association of wisdom with the words that Solomon wrote because when given a chance to ask for anything from God as he was to assume the reign of Israel, Solomon chose wisdom, wisdom from God so he could properly lead the people under his charge.

We know God delivered on that request and Solomon gained a solid reputation in and outside of Israel as a man of wisdom and discernment. He pondered and sought out the right words to say and write from God and then shared the direction he received in proverbs and other forms of imparted knowledge for the people. Subsequently, all the words that Solomon wrote or spoke were upright and true because they originated from an upright and true God, the one and only real God who reigned as Master over all creation.

These wise words of Solomon, part of the collection of inspired words of God we get to study today, serve to goad us, to lead us on the paths of righteousness by the Lord who is our Shepherd. As we lead this thing called life, we’re to submit ourselves to the leading of the Shepherd, seeking, receiving, and embracing His wisdom just as Solomon did and then ensuring we share that wisdom with others in the words we speak and write.

Friends, this is the ultimate goal I set to meet every day through The Christian Walk ministry, that I might seek and receive the Lord’s wisdom as I study and reflect on His word, then share the wisdom He gives me with my readers through words that are upright and true. He’s ready to do the same with anyone else who submits to His will and way with a servant’s heart.

In the end translation, this Christian journey we’re on is a blessed one because we are not walking alone. The Lord God Almighty, our wisdom-imparting Shepherd, is alive and with us every step of the way as we live this thing called life.

All thanks and praise unto Him for this and for all that He does in love to care for us and use us for His purposes.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
