The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Again I saw something meaningless under the sun:

There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother. There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth.

“For whom am I toiling,” he asked, “and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?”

This too is meaningless—a miserable business!

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.

Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone?

Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Ecclesiastes 4:7-12

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Have you ever felt alone? Isolated and as if you have no one? Abandoned by someone you trusted?

I have and it’s an experience I would not wish on anyone. Maybe you can relate as you read this today.

As we read our passage from the 4th Chapter of Ecclesiastes, it’s obvious that the matter of loneliness is one to avoid. We were made to be in relation to others, something we find God sanctioning as far back as the first days of creation. Look at these words that were spoken by God after He created Adam, the first man:

The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.”

That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

Genesis 2:18, 20b-24

God said it was not good for man to be alone and so He created a partner for him. We are made for relationship. Relationship with one another and certainly relationship with the God who made us, the God who promised He would never leave nor forsake us, the God who through that promise is always with us.

We are never alone.

It is God who is with us and gives our life meaning and satisfaction and enjoyment and joy.

It is God who helps us up when we fall down in life, always there to put us back on our feet/

It is God who brings us warmth and comfort and love when we are without another to share life with.

It is God who gives us the strength to do all things (Philippians 4:13), a strength that protects us and will never be overpowered, a strength we cannot possibly have on our own.

Yes, God made us for relationship. If you’re feeling alone today, open your eyes, ears, heart, mind and soul to Him and you will see that He is right there with you.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
