The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
Ears that hear and eyes that see—the Lord has made them both.
Proverbs 20:12
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
As I was driving to work today, I looked up in the morning sky and there was the moon, full and majestic against a backdrop of light blue spotted with wispy clouds. It was an amazing sight.
While I was observing this, I was of course listening to my Christian music, the Christmas variety this time of year, and the song on was talking about the baby Jesus and His coming to save us all in Bethlehem. I found my heart connecting the dots to what I was seeing and hearing, giving thanks to God for His amazing creation power, displayed through the moon in the sky and His Son who He freely sent to save the world.
My eyes and ears, eyes and ears invented and created by the Lord, were opening my heart, mind, and soul to His glories while sending my spirit soaring to heights of praise and thanksgiving. It led me to think about this proverb for today:
Ears that hear and eyes that see—the Lord has made them both. Proverbs 20:12
So often we take the little things for granted, don’t we? We see countless things with our eyes and hear countless things through our ears but rarely give thanks that we have eyes and ears to start with. Think about it a moment. What would life be like if you lost your sight and were blinded to seeing anything at all? What if you could see things around you that you knew were emitting sound but couldn’t hear anything? It would change everything in your world, wouldn’t it?
Perhaps, we should take more time focusing on the little things of life that make such a big difference in our quality of life.
Eyes to see.
Ears to hear.
A nose to smell.
A tongue to taste.
Feet to walk.
Hands to hold and to fold as we kneel and fall down upon bended knee, giving thanks for all that the Lord has done to make us who we are.
In this holiday season that starts with thanksgiving, moves into a celebration of giving and receiving, and then culminates with a look forward toward the new, let us all take time to give thanks for the little things the Lord has done for us, to celebrate how much He has given and we have received, displayed no more prominently than the little baby Jesus being born in Bethlehem’s manger as our Savior, and move into the new year with a renewed sensitivity to appreciating the little things the Lord has done for us in life that make such a big difference in being able to serve Him and others.
Blessings to all of you this holiday season and beyond.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
