In
Christ, Mark
The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy
word.
The Lord brought me forth as the first
of His works, before His deeds of old; I was formed long ages ago, at the very
beginning, when the world came to be.
When there were no watery depths, I was
given birth, when there were no springs overflowing with water; before the
mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was given birth, before He
made the world or its fields or any of the dust of the earth.
I was there when He set the heavens in
place, when He marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, when He
established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep, when
He gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep His command, and
when He marked out the foundations of the earth.
Then I was constantly at His side. I
was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in His presence, rejoicing
in His whole world and delighting in mankind.
Proverbs 8:22-31
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to
God.
If you’re a regular reader of this
devotion, you know I spent a lot of time serving in the United States Navy,
twenty-eight and a half years to be exact. During that time, I served with
thousands upon thousands of people, many of which special relationships were
born, relationships I will treasure forever.
These relationships were forged through
discovering a lot about the people I interacted with day after day. These
service men and women came from all parts of our nation and even nations outside
of the United States in some instances. They came from varied life experiences
and socio-economic backgrounds. You could easily find someone that grew up in the
streets of New York City working alongside a Shipmate who grew up on a rural farm
in Iowa. With this, you can see where a lot of camaraderie built between Sailors
resulted from them getting to know a lot about where they come from and what
their life experiences were.
This is true about all relationships in
life, isn’t it? When you want to start getting to know someone, you typically
want to know a little about where that person has been in life. For when you
are discussing where you have been, you can’t help but talk about your
experiences while you were there, opening up windows of understanding as to whom
you are and why you are the way you are.
In this second part of getting to know
divine wisdom, we find divine wisdom revealing its origins, answering the
question - “Where are you from? - in great detail. Take a look again at our passage:
The Lord brought me forth as the first of His works, before
His deeds of old; I was formed long ages ago, at the very beginning, when the
world came to be.
When there were no watery depths, I was given birth, when
there were no springs overflowing with water; before the mountains were settled
in place, before the hills, I was given birth, before He made the world or its
fields or any of the dust of the earth.
I was there when He set the heavens in place, when He marked
out the horizon on the face of the deep, when He established the clouds above and
fixed securely the fountains of the deep, when He gave the sea its boundary so
the waters would not overstep His command, and when He marked out the
foundations of the earth.
Then I was constantly at His side. I was filled with delight
day after day, rejoicing always in His presence, rejoicing in His whole world and
delighting in mankind.
Our immediate take-away from this is
that divine wisdom has been around a really long time, like
since-the-dawn-of-creation long. Go to Genesis, Chapter 1, verse1 and you’ll find
the Bible opens with this statement:
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
There is no doubt that God did this in
the beginning. There also is no doubt that it didn’t happen before wisdom came
to be because God’s word here in Proverbs makes it clear: The Lord brought
wisdom forth as the first of His works. Next time you want to catch someone up
in Bible trivia, ask them what God created first. I would bet you that a
majority of people would quickly spurt out “the heavens and earth” because they
are unaware of these words in Proverbs.
So divine wisdom was created first, before
all things including man and woman. There were no watery depths, no springs
overflowing with water, no mountains in place, no fields or hills established.
In fact, there wasn’t even dust before there was divine wisdom.
Divine wisdom existed before the heavens
were set in place or the boundaries of the horizon were established. The clouds
had yet to take their place in the sky and the fountains of the deep had yet to
be secured. The sea had yet to be made with its boundaries set and the foundations
of the earth were not yet marked out.
Yes, before there was anything, there
was divine wisdom, a constant companion at the Lord’s side from day 1,
experiencing the daily delight of serving alongside Him and always rejoicing in
His presence. And if we look today, we will still find divine wisdom attached
to the hip of our Lord and longing to have a relationship with us.
Friends, who wouldn’t want to hang out
every day with divine wisdom? For when we do, we will find ourselves constantly
in the presence of the Lord God Almighty, in a place where we experience such a
sense of daily delight that we are taken to the place of rejoicing.
I don’t know about you but this is the
place I always want to be, now and forever, in consistent communion with the
Lord through my relationship with divine wisdom. I pray you’ll join me.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
