The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Remember me, Lord, when you show favor to Your people, come to my aid when You save them, that I may enjoy the prosperity of Your chosen ones, that I may share in the joy of Your nation and join Your inheritance in giving praise.

Psalm 106:4-5

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

This is a big world with millions upon millions of people living upon it. They live across a multitude of nations and locations in northern and southern hemispheres. They are men and women and children, young and old, rich and poor, believers and non-believers in Jesus Christ. They speak different languages and live in societies that have different cultural norms, often very different and even contradictory to one another.

Yes, the earth is densely populated with peoples who live in cultures that are very different from one another. And yet, one thing remains constant: they serve the same God. This God, the very God who created all, is Lord of all. He rules over and cares for the masses. Sometimes when we consider this, we might wonder if God might not be so occupied with other that He might forget about us individually and this might lead us to ask God to remember us.

As I read the fourth and fifth verses of the 106th Psalm, I couldn’t help but think the psalmist was feeling like he could possibly be lost in the great shuffle of creation as he wrote these words:

Remember me, Lord, when you show favor to Your people, come to my aid when You save them, that I may enjoy the prosperity of Your chosen ones, that I may share in the joy of Your nation and join Your inheritance in giving praise.

Through his words, we find the psalmist wanting to be included in those who had found favor in God’s eyes. He coveted being in the Lord’s approval, petitioning for His help and salvation.

We should want to follow his lead. In fact, our daily goal for living should include striving to be in God’s favor. For we see over and over again that the Lord responds swiftly to those who are living in His favor. He brings His aid without hesitation to the ones who have served Him obediently in reverence and faith, saving them in their times of trouble. As the psalms have stated over and over, God was the rescue for the people of Israel and He is our rescue today. We should aim to please Him and receive His saving protection in return.

The psalmist saw three primary things gained by remaining in God’s favor and in a position to receive His aid and salvation:

First, he knew he would enjoy prosperity.

“Submit to God and be at peace with him; in this way prosperity will come to you.” Job 22:21

God’s word is clear here. For those who submit to God and His will and way, they will find prosperity and peace. There is a richness involved in being in the Lord’s good graces and living in righteousness as He demands and commands. The psalmist longed for this prosperity, to be counted among the chosen ones, and we should long for it as well.

Second, the psalmist wished to share in the joy of the nation. There’s a joy that comes with being in the Lord’s favor. If you don’t believe it, think about the opposite, the trepidation and dread that comes when you know you are standing in His judgment and discipline. We should all want to be in a place where He smiles down upon us, pleased in the way we serve Him obediently, honoring Him with our lives. For at least for me, when God is happy then I am happy.  And I wouldn’t want it any other way in my life.

Finally, the psalmist wanted to join God’s favored ones in praising Him. When we realize the rich rewards that come from trusting and serving God in spirit and in truth, then we find ourselves filled with a joy that results in praise. We fully realize the fullest extent of the Lord’s goodness and we not only long to tell Him thanks but we want to proclaim His greatness and goodness to all we know and see. How could we not respond in any other way but praise when we are favored by the Lord God Almighty?

Friends, we, like the psalmist, should long for God to remember us, not because we’re selfish but rather because we long so much to be in His presence and counted among those He favors. When we live as He commands with every breath and step we take in life, we will find ourselves right where we want to be, and experience the joy and praise that comes along with it.

Amen

In Christ,

Mark
