The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
Praise the Lord, my soul. Lord my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty.
The Lord wraps Himself in light as with a garment; He stretches out the heavens like a tent and lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters. He makes the clouds His chariot and rides on the wings of the wind. He makes winds his messengers, flames of fire His servants. He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved. You covered it with the watery depths as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. But at Your rebuke the waters fled, at the sound of Your thunder they took to flight; they flowed over the mountains, they went down into the valleys, to the place You assigned for them. You set a boundary they cannot cross; never again will they cover the earth. He makes springs pour water into the ravines; it flows between the mountains. They give water to all the beasts of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. The birds of the sky nest by the waters; they sing among the branches. He waters the mountains from His upper chambers; the land is satisfied by the fruit of his work. He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to cultivate — bringing forth food from the earth: wine that gladdens human hearts, oil to make their faces shine, and bread that sustains their hearts. The trees of the Lord are well watered, the cedars of Lebanon that He planted. There the birds make their nests; the stork has its home in the junipers. The high mountains belong to the wild goats; the crags are a refuge for the hyrax. He made the moon to mark the seasons, and the sun knows when to go down. You bring darkness, it becomes night, and all the beasts of the forest prowl. The lions roar for their prey and seek their food from God. The sun rises, and they steal away; they return and lie down in their dens. Then people go out to their work, to their labor until evening.
How many are Your works, Lord! In wisdom You made them all; the earth is full of Your creatures.
There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number — living things both large and small. There the ships go to and fro, and Leviathan, which you formed to frolic there. All creatures look to You to give them their food at the proper time. When You give it to them, they gather it up; when You open Your hand, they are satisfied with good things. When You hide Your face, they are terrified; when You take away their breath, they die and return to the dust. When You send Your Spirit, they are created, and You renew the face of the ground.
May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in His works — He who looks at the earth, and it trembles, who touches the mountains, and they smoke. I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. May my meditation be pleasing to Him, as I rejoice in the Lord. But may sinners vanish from the earth and the wicked be no more.
Praise the Lord, my soul. Praise the Lord.
Psalm 104
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Do we really ever stop to just consider how amazingly magnificent God is? The evidence is all around us and yet I’m afraid we get so caught up in the busy-ness of life that we lose sight of God’s unmatchable power and might, a power and might that is able to handle anything we go through.
Well, the 104th Psalm gives us a great reminder of the splendor and majesty and might of our God, a God who did it all in making this world we call home. In fact, the psalmist reminds us that God is clothed in majesty and splendor. Consider all of the following things that God made and then ask yourself how often you experience these very things in your life:
1. God made the light, the light that brings us from darkness so all of God’s glory could be revealed. Spiritually, He illuminates our paths to guide us along the narrow paths of righteousness.
2. God made the heavens and stretched them across the expanse of the sky.
3. God created the clouds and rides them in reign over His creation. Have you ever looked up, seen a cloud, and wondered if God was riding on it?
4. God created the wind, a wind that propels Him as He rides the clouds and doubles in service as His messengers.
5. God made the earth and set it in its foundations so that it could never be moved. Note it doesn’t say shaken, just moved. His power and might are on display when an earthquake happens. Only God can do that.
6. God covered the earth with water, waters that at one time stood higher than the mountains before God rebuked them and ordered them to recede, flowing over the mountains to the valleys He assigned them to. And then God set boundaries for the seas so that they will never again cover the entire earth. As the Master Architect, God commands all things to meet His perfect creation blueprint. He puts them in their places and sets the parameters by which they are to exist. And that goes for man too, something we all need to remember.
7. In order to sustain life in all He made, God formed smaller bodies of water in the way of springs which would flow from the ravines between the mountains.
8. This water from the springs would give water to all the beasts of the field that God made, whether wild donkeys or birds of the sky. It also nourished the land he created which in turn produced grass for the cattle and plants that the people He created would cultivate, bringing forth food like bread to nourish them, wine to gladden their hearts, and oils to make their faces shine. Think about all the things you get to enjoy like these and give thanks to the God who made them be.
9. God planted great trees and ensured they too were well watered by the springs. Look at a tree today and thank God for His creation power. These trees would provide shade and shelter for birds like the stork.
10. The great majestic mountains formed by God’s hands provided refuge for the wild goats and hyrax.
11. The sun and moon we see in the day and night sky were formed and placed in orbit by none other than God Almighty who used them to mark the seasons. He commands when they rise and fall, when we have day and night, and these signal the behaviors of God’s creatures. When man is signaled to sleep at night the lion has a different impulse, the impulse to prowl and hunt and seek the food provided by – you guessed it – God. When the sun rises, we get up and go to work, work that God blesses us with I might add, while the lions lie down in their dens to slumber. Indeed, God orders all things in life.
12. God created and filled the earth with a multitude of creatures, large and small, that live in the sea and on land. All of them are fully reliant on God’s provision and He grants what they need at His appointed time. As God provides, the creatures gladly receive it and gather up what He gives. They are satisfied by His goodness and blessings. Maybe we need to remember this as we worry and fret about what we need. God has and will provide for us in accordance with His perfect will and timing.
13. Finally, God controls our life from beginning to end. He ordains our life to start, He watches over us as we live and corrects us as a father disciplines his child as we grow, and He will one day take away our breath and this worldly life, the life He granted, will be over. But God will not allow His creation to expire and die off. No, He replenishes His world, sending His Spirit to create new creatures and “renew the face of the ground.”
Friends, God did all this. He, and He alone, deserves all our glory because His glory is on full display each and every day. He and He alone is worthy of all our honor and praise.
Let us all echo the attitude of the psalmist and sing praise to the Lord all our lives. May our meditations and prayers always be rooted in thanksgiving for all God has done, all He is doing, and all He is yet to do.
And may we always remember the following as we deal with life’s issues: This almighty God of creation who has done all things in power and might is the same God who with you and me. The God who can do it all can more than handle whatever we are going through or will go through. It’s little wonder why the scriptures proclaim, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31)
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
