GOD IS MAJESTY

Can I pray for you in any way? Send any prayer requests to OurChristianWalk@aol.com.

In Christ, Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory in the heavens. Through the praise of children and infants You have established a stronghold against Your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place, what is mankind that You are mindful of them, human beings that You care for them?

You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of Your hands; You put everything under their feet: all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.

Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!

Psalm 8

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Webster’s defines the word majestic as someone who has or exhibits majesty which means sovereign power, authority, or dignity. As we consider the truest definition of majesty, we need go no further than the Lord God Almighty – the King of kings and Lord of lords.

It’s little wonder that David opens and closes the 8th Psalm with the same proclamation:

“Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!”

Indeed, when it comes to sovereign power, authority, and dignity, there is no one greater than God and David frames several key examples His majesty.

First, the Lord has set His glory in the heavens. The Contemporary English Translation of this verse reads, “You let your glory be seen in the heavens above.” Consider the skies we gaze into. In the day, we see the sun and clouds and, if storms come, we experience thunder and lightning from the heavens. At night, we marvel at the moon and stars, and on some nights, a view of other planets God created. It’s important to remember that we have no idea how vast the universe is. It is far greater than what we will ever see with the naked eye, that’s for sure.

Who else could create and produce all of this? Only the Lord has that kind of sovereign power and majesty and He always puts His glory on display by what we view in the heavens.

Second, God’s sovereign authority and majesty is over all. No enemy can triumph over Him as He has “established a stronghold” against His enemies, silencing the foe and the avenger. This is good news for us when we go up against opposition while carrying out the will of God. For no matter how someone might try and come against us, when we have God’s power, authority, and majesty on our side, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31) David truly knew this first hand as he was delivered more than once from those who wished to do him harm. It’s a good thing that David was a man after God’s own heart.

Finally, this majestic, sovereign God cares for you and me. He is Lord over us but He doesn’t repress or oppress us. Instead, He values and loves us greatly. This God who made the heavens, moons, and stars and all of creation, is mindful of us and delegated some of His majestic, sovereign power to us. He made us “rulers over the works” of His hands and put everything under our feet, all the flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. God gave mankind authority over them all thus making man an important player in managing His creation.

Friends, God is majesty – revealing His glory in the heavens, exercising authority over His foes, and loving and caring for His beloved children. Let us all like David sing His praises by exclaiming forever:

“Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!”

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
