The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.”
Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen.
Revelation 22:20-21
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Jesus is coming back to earth again. We know so because He said so Himself as He spoke with His disciples in the opening three verses of John, chapter 14:
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in Me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with Me that you also may be where I am.” John 14:1-3
Jesus told His faithful followers, “Do not let your hearts be troubled”, and He still speaks those words into the hearts of Christian believers today. For just as He vowed, He has gone to “prepare a place” for all those who have placed their belief in Him as Savior and one day He “will come back to take” all His disciples to be with Him.
We find this assurance reaffirmed at the time of His ascension into Heaven, the account found in the first chapter of the Book of Acts. There we read this:
After His suffering, He presented Himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that He was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.
Then they gathered around Him and asked Him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by His own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
After He said this, He was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.
They were looking intently up into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into Heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into Heaven.” Acts 1:3, 6-11
After Jesus’ resurrection on the third day following His crucifixion, Jesus indeed “presented Himself” to the women who had come to His tomb to anoint His body, the disciples, and many others. He didn’t leave any doubt He was very much alive through the “many convincing proofs” that happened “over a period of forty days”.
Then, after addressing His followers one final time, the scriptures tell us that he “was taken up” to Heaven “before their very eyes”. As they gazed skyward, they received a message from “two men dressed in white” that had “suddenly” appeared. Beginning with a question, their message was short and to the point:
“Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into Heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into Heaven.”
Jesus would come back and it was something that the early first century church longed for. We see this at the very end of Paul’s first letter to the church in Corinth. In the 16th chapter, we find the following words:
“And may the Lord come soon.” v.22 CEV
Expressed more than 2,000 years ago, it was obvious that the first Christian believers were as distressed over the world they lived in as we are often today. For sure, there is nothing this world can offer that will ever compare or exceed the coming glory that all Jesus followers will experience when they are ushered into eternal life after Jesus returns. The 21st and 22nd chapters of this Book of Revelation paint a picture of the new kingdom of God where Christians will dwell and simply reading about it shows us why we find the yearning for Jesus to come back echoed at the very end of this last book in the Bible.
He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.”
Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen. Vv.21-22
Revelation is the testimony of Jesus Christ (Revelation 1:1-2) and He, Jesus, “who testifies” in this book assures all who read it that He is “coming soon” to which we find the only suitable response, “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus”.
Come and rescue us from the evil and sin of this world.
Come so I can be made new, becoming holy as You are holy.
Come to bring me into the place You have prepared for me, into my everlasting dwelling place to abide with You and God forever.
Yes, come Lord Jesus come but until that time or until I die in You, still assuring my place with You at Your appointed time, continue to lead and guide me so to carry out Your Great Commission and make disciples of all nations. I hunger for Your coming but not at the expense of carrying on Your work through every moment that You give, knowing that You have promised to be with me until the end of the age (Matthew 28:20).
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
