The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.

Hebrews 11:39-40

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Today’s this series ends as we have reached the end of Hebrews, chapter 11, a chapter centered on the matter of faith. Through this micro study, we have gleaned a rich bounty of truth as to what a Christian believer gains when they place faith in the Lord first in their life. As we close today, there couldn’t be a more suitable final faith-producing benefit to look at as we cover the final two verses of this chapter:

These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect. Vv. 39-40

Throughout chapter 11, the author of this letter highlights those who championed faith in God through the Old Testament era but the best promise they could trust in had not been established before their lives on earth ceased. This is because the New Covenant of God wasn’t set in place until Jesus had been born, crucified, and resurrected from the tomb, bring salvation to anyone who simply would believe in Him (John 3:16), the perfect Lamb of God who was sent by His Father to take away the sin of the world (John 1:29).

This gift of everlasting life in the very Kingdom of God (aka Heaven) was the writer of Hebrews was referring to when he said that the Lord has “planned something better” so that the faithful ones of the old covenant could be made perfect with all those who placed their faith in Jesus after He came and that includes us today.

No one has seen salvation at work. No one has experienced it while living in this worldly existence.

And yet, Christians believe it is sure for them because God has promised it and Jesus followers trust that He never ever fails to keep a promise He has made.

Thus, faith brings the believer a blessed assurance that the ultimate gift of God, the gift of salvation, will come after their Great Commission work is finished and their heart beats for the final time. It is the incredible hope that allows a Christian to persevere and press on, no matter what happens in life. For anyone who believes in Jesus, the best is yet to come and no matter how good this life might get for us, it will pale in comparison to the glory ahead, the glory of the kingdom inheritance set aside for all believers.

Thanks be to God for His incredible gift of eternal life through Jesus, His Son.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
