The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

For surely it is not angels He helps, but Abraham’s descendants. For this reason He had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that He might become a merciful and faithful High Priest in service to God, and that He might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.

Hebrews 2:16-17

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Have you ever listened to someone share an experience and immediately thought to yourself, “I can definitely relate!”

Live long enough and you will find yourself going through so many things that it’s inevitable that you will develop an ability to be able to empathize with others because you have been where they are presently.

As a Christian, I have always felt a comfort in knowing that Jesus isn’t a Savior who is detached and distant from the human experience we all go through living this thing called life. Rather, He fully understands what we go through because He too was human once and walked this same earth.

In other words, Jesus has “been there, done that” when it comes to anything that we might face in this world. This is the point that we find the writer of Hebrews making as he writes to the Jewish Christian community. Look again at his words here:

For surely it is not angels He helps, but Abraham’s descendants. For this reason He had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that He might become a merciful and faithful High Priest in service to God, and that He might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted. Hebrews 2:16-17

Although He was conceived supernaturally, Jesus was born like any other baby, growing up into adulthood under the watchful eye of His parents, Joseph and Mary. He then later launched into ministry and began to walk the path to fulfill the will of His Father, a plan where He would willingly offer Himself up as an atoning sacrifice for all mankind so to take away all their sins.

Indeed, Jesus was “fully human in every way” and God didn’t impose any special privileges upon Him as He lived out His worldly existence. He experienced hardship, poverty, homelessness, loss, heartbreak, persecution, and even temptation (Matthew 4:1-11) so He would be able to help His disciples who would experience the same difficulties in life.

Jesus gets us. It’s as plain and simple as that.

And so when you lift up your prayers to Him, don’t think that He doesn’t know what you’re going through or what it feels like. For no one else can relate to you and your humanity like He can.

Trust and believe in that.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
