The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will come down from Heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.

Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

1 Thessalonians 4:15-18, 5:1-3

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Our two greatest encouragements.

First, anyone who places their belief in Jesus Christ as Savior will be saved and have victory over death. At the time when this earthly life ends, there is a time of rest before a triumphant, magnificent, glorious entry into eternal glory comes.

And it will come because Jesus promised it.

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in Me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with Me that you also may be where I am.” John 14:1-3

Jesus didn’t just ascend into Heaven to sit at His Father’s right hand in authority over everything (Acts 1:9) and abandon all those who placed faith in Him. No, He is coming back and this is our second greatest encouragement. Look again at our verses for today as we look at the closing verses of 1 Thessalonians, chapter 4 and the opening verses of chapter 5:

Vv. 4:15-18, 5:1-3

At a time not known to anyone but God, the Lord Jesus Himself “will come down from Heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God”. The scene will be momentous and remarkable as will what happens next because “the dead in Christ will rise first” to meet Him “in the air” and then those “who are still alive” in Christ will rise “will be caught up with them in the clouds”.  Together, all believers will “be with the Lord forever”.

Can you imagine this spectacle, this miraculous and amazing assembly in the air?

If you’re a Christian, you are going to be a part of it, the day your salvation comes in earnest and you inherit your portion of the very Kingdom of God.

We may not know what lies ahead in our earthly life up to its end when we enter into rest unless Jesus returns first but we do know our ultimate future and it will be the best life experience ever, one that will be everlasting.

Friends, God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).

Let this promise as well as the known return of our Savior Jesus to take us to where He is going for all eternity to be your two greatest encouragements.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
