The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.

Ephesians 4:25

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

In verses 23 and 24 of Ephesians, chapter 4, we find Paul encouraging the Ephesian Christians “to be made new” in the attitude of their minds and to “put on” a “new self” showing they were “created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness”.

The call was to be new in Christ once believing in Him as Savior, striving to live as He did for this would lead them to “true righteousness and holiness”. In Second Corinthians, Paul reminded the Christians in Corinth that anyone who was in Christ would become a “new creation”, the old gone and set aside for the dawning life in and through Jesus.

Okay, so the Christian believers were to put on a “new self” but what displayed qualities would show that this had happened? What would be the signs that a change toward living like Jesus was taking root?

We’re going to look at answers to these questions as we look further at Ephesians 4. Here’s the first distinguishing behavior someone should exhibit when they are in Christ:

Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. v.25

It’s been said that “honesty is the best policy” and the scriptures definitely back up this statement. Note the word “must” in the demand to “put off falsehood and speak truthfully” to others. Christians aren’t allowed to lie because Jesus never did. He was perfectly honest and trustworthy in every way. In fact, Jesus declared Himself to be THE Truth, period.

Without Jesus, a person has no hope to live a life of complete, unadulterated integrity. It’s only when that person comes to Christ and puts on their new self that they can have a chance to say goodbye to falsehood and hello to veracity.

If you’re having trouble behaving in ways that are honest, it’s time to come to Jesus and allow the One who is THE Truth to bring His truth into the way you live.

Tomorrow, we’ll look at how anger isn’t a quality of someone putting on a new self.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
