The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.

2 Corinthians 4:5-6

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

Have you ever noticed where a majority of crimes, sinful crimes committed by one human being against another or others, is more often than not done after the sun sets?

Evil seems to be right at home in the darkness and this should come as little surprise for the Bible makes this clear over and over again. People who choose sin, and in doing so the influence of Satan, walk in spiritual darkness and this spiritual darkness often carries over to the physical environment that sinners like to operate in. They feel right at home in the dark. It’s their comfort zone because it allows them to commit evil acts and do so undetected, covered by the cloak of darkness.

Conversely, those who choose to follow Jesus live in the light, a light they receive in ample measure by the Savior who proclaimed Himself the “Light of the world”. They will never walk in darkness as long as they walk alongside Him.

The Apostle Paul knew this all too well through his experience with Jesus. When he was walking in the darkness, persecuting and killing Christian believers, he met Jesus in broad daylight while traveling on the road to Damascus. Jesus didn’t confront Him in the dark. That isn’t the way He operates. Rather, the Light of the world challenged Saul (Paul’s name back then) in the light of day, striking him blind so he could really see his spiritual state. Three days later, during a visit from a man he did not know (Ananias), Saul regained his sight with a simple touch given in the name of Jesus and his eyes were opened to the real light, Jesus. From that point on, Paul never turned back. He committed himself to walk in the light of Christ in everything he did and openly professed this as we see in today’s two verses from 2 Corinthians 4. Paul writes:

For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.  vv. 5-6

Paul and his ministry associates preached nothing but the Gospel of Jesus which meant their preaching was light-infused, words filled with the blessed power of the Holy Spirit. Indeed, they lived in the light because Jesus “made His light shine” in their hearts so to give them “the light of the knowledge of God’s glory”.

Friends, this is what comes to those who choose to believe in Jesus. They are taken from their spiritual darkness and moved into the holy Light of the Lord, a Light that illuminates the path they are to walk for the cause of Christ. This path is paved with disciple making, servitude, and selfless sacrifice, extending goodness and compassion to those considered the least of these.

In my life, I have walked in darkness and I know now how nothing good ever happens there. This was revealed to me when I chose Christ in my life and He did what He promised. He gave me the light of life.

For that, I am eternally grateful.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
