The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we don’t know where You are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

John 14:5-6

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

I think anyone you ask would say that they hope to go to heaven some day. I can honestly say I have never had anyone tell me they want to go to hell. Likewise, no one has ever mentioned a third option, probably because there isn’t one.

For the raw, unvarnished truth of the matter is that there are only two ways a person can go when this earthly life is over and both options last forever. One involves salvation and an eternal life in heaven filled with love and light and love and peace; the other takes a person into the everlasting damnation of hell and never ending torment.

Frankly, I don’t think it should be a very difficult decision for anyone as to which way they would like to go. Only a fool would opt for a forever life of perdition and anguish.

Okay, so if there is only one viable option for people to opt for, then the question becomes:

“How do I get to heaven after this life is over and avoid hell?”

Jesus gives us the answer in today’s scripture passage in John 14:6, a verse that should be second most well known verse right after John 3:16. There we find Jesus proclaiming this:

“I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

These words from Jesus came in response to a question posed by one of His faithful disciples, Thomas, after Jesus had told him and his fellow Christ followers that He would soon be leaving them. Jesus assured His disciples that He was going to prepare a place for them and then would return to bring them to that place. He finished by telling His followers that they know the way to where He was going.

That final statement seemed to be the one that caused confusion for we find Thomas, seemingly speaking for the group, telling Jesus that they didn’t really know where He was going and that meant the way was unknown as well. And so in verse 6, Jesus clarifies in a way that they couldn’t possibly misunderstand.

For He was going to be with God the Father and He was the only way that anyone could follow. In other words, there is no other way to get to heaven and dwell with God except through Jesus. Period.

Jesus said it and since He is sinless, He never tells a lie. Therefore, He is the Truth and He made it clear that no one gets to heaven except by way of Him and this means believing in Him as Savior. This makes Him the Way, the only Way to get into heaven and gain eternal life with God. Thus, Jesus is the Life for no one gets to eternal life except through Him.

Believing in Jesus is the only way to get to heaven. He is the one way and the one way only to get to God. Reject Him and you’ll book your way to hell.

It’s really as simple as that.

So given this fundamental breakdown of the two places a person might find themselves in when this earthly life is over, the question becomes:

Which place are you heading?

If you’ve accepted Jesus as Savior, then your ticket is punched for admission to heaven and everlasting life free from the hardships and afflictions of this life.

If you’ve decided you don’t need Jesus to save you, then you can expect the hardships and afflictions of this earthly life to pale in comparison to the agony, suffering, and misery you’ll experience every day for all eternity in hell.

My prayer for you today is that if you’re heading the wrong way and on the path to damnation, you’ll turn to Jesus, confess Him as your personal Savior, and guarantee that the best is yet to come for you, a best that will endure forever.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
