The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

No one is like you, Lord; You are great, and Your name is mighty in power.

Who should not fear You, King of the nations? This is your due.

Among all the wise leaders of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like You. They are all senseless and foolish; they are taught by worthless wooden idols. Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz. What the craftsman and goldsmith have made is then dressed in blue and purple—all made by skilled workers.

But the Lord is the true God; He is the living God, the eternal King. When He is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure His wrath.

Jeremiah 10:6-10

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Through most of the first ten chapter of Jeremiah, we have seen two recurring themes.

First, the people of Israel had willfully sinned against God, directly violating His most primary commandment to have no other gods before Him by worshipping false gods and idols.

Second, God showed He will not tolerate such deliberate disobedience and insolence, sending harsh judgment upon His people.

Today, we take a break from these two central themes to put our focus fully where it should always be and that is the Lord God Almighty, the Maker of heaven and earth, the Master of all Creation, the One who is like no other. Take a look again at our verses for today and pay close attention to the praise and honor directed toward the only One who is worthy of it.

But the Lord is the true God; He is the living God, the eternal King. When He is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure His wrath.  Jeremiah 10:6-10

Note here the key attributes that Jeremiah applies to the Lord:

1. He is exclusive.

“No one is like you, Lord”

God commanded the Israelites through Moses at Mount Sinai to have no other gods before Him (Exodus 20:3). This was because there were literally no other gods although people seemed to think in their minds that there were. No one or nothing could rival God, the only One who could do all things, the One through which nothing was impossible.

2. He is great.

“You are great”

Nothing possessed the power and greatness that the Lord had, a power and greatness that He had put on display in numerous occasions like splitting the sea to allow the Israelites to escape the Egyptians, making water come from a rock to quench the thirst of His people, and sending manna and quail from the heavens to feed the Israelites during their journey to the Promised Land.

3. The mere mention of His name summons up mightiness.

“Your name is mighty in power”

How powerful is the name of the Lord? When you feel like Satan is attacking you in some way, deny him in the name of the Lord and watch what happens. In my experience, Satan always flees because He cannot stand in the name of the Lord and the might it carries.

4. He is to be revered and respected.

“Who should not fear You, King of the nations? This is your due”

An almighty, powerful Lord who has no equal is a force for everyone to reckon with. You should never want to get on His bad side, that’s for sure. With this, we need to have a healthy fear of the Lord, acknowledging Him for all He is, all He was, and all He is yet to be in humble submission to His will, word, and way.

5. He is true.

“The Lord is the true God”

Because He is exclusive and like no other, that means He is the only true God. Any other god that would be brought forward would be counterfeit and there were plenty of them around in the times of Old Testament Israel.

6. He is alive.

“He is the living God”

The idols the Israelites worshipped were as dead as the materials they were made of. The people could call on them all they wanted but there would be no action or response because they were calling out to things that didn’t exist.

God on the other hand was and is very much alive, always with us and for us, always listening to receive our praises and petitions in times of need.

7. He is eternal.

“He is the eternal King”

God has existed from the very advent of creation and He has existed ever since. One day, the scriptures tell us that the present heavens and earth will be destroyed and a new heaven and earth will replace them, inhabited by all who placed their faith, hope, and trust in Jesus as Savior (Revelation 21).

Who will be living and abiding there with them forever?

Jesus and His Father, the Lord God Almighty, the eternal King of kings and Lord of lords.

8. He can get angry and when He does, it’s not a good thing.

“When He is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure His wrath”

I mentioned earlier that the Israelites would face harsh judgment as a result of their sinful worship of false gods and idols. They had incited the Lord’s wrath through their wicked disobedience and disrespect and His punishment was such that they could not endure through it. Instead, they were sent off for seventy years of exile in Babylon, seventy years spent in isolation from the Lord and oppression from foreign people in a foreign land.

Great. Mighty in power. Revered. True. Alive. Eternal. Judging.

The Lord God Almighty is all this and so much more. He truly has no challenger and is like no other.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
