DO NOT (PART 19) – BUILDING PROPERLY

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.

Proverbs 24:3-4

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Think of your life as a house, the place where you reside as you step through the time granted you on earth. If someone were to visit it, what would they find? How would they view your house (life)?

Hopefully, they see it as Solomon depicts it in the 21st of the 30 Sayings of the Wise found between Proverbs 22:17 and Proverbs 24:

By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures. Proverbs 24:3-4

In these two verses, we find the blueprint for building a proper house of life and it’s based on the matter of wisdom, understanding, and knowledge. Now you can’t find these main building materials at a home improvement store so don’t waltz into Home Depot or Lowes and ask what aisle you can find wisdom or understanding or knowledge because they are probably going to just give you a strange look. This is because the only way to build your house of life properly is by turning to the Lord God Almighty and allowing Him to help you build.

The Lord is the Master Builder of all things. He’s proven that from the dawn of creation as He built the earth we live on, the universe we gaze into, the water we drink as well as the animals and plant life we eat for survival. And perhaps He saved His most perfect work for when He created men and women to serve Him to further His kingdom here on earth. Yes, if you want to build right you turn to the right (or in this case righteous) Builder and that is the Lord.

Jesus had something further to add to Solomon’s words on building. Look at what our Savior had to say:

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” Luke 6:46-49

Solomon told us that a properly built house of life was constructed from wisdom, understanding, and knowledge. We know we find those materials only from the Lord. Jesus later affirms this saying that those who hears His words and puts them into practice, in other words, the one who receives His wisdom, understanding, and knowledge and applies it to life, those people will build their lives on a firm foundation that cannot be moved or shaken.

Conversely, Jesus tells us that anyone who shuns His word - forfeiting wisdom, understanding, and knowledge – will have a life with no foundation, a life destined for collapse and destruction.

The wise builder turns to the Lord and His word to construct His life, filling the rooms of his house of life with treasures of heaven.

The foolish builder rejects the Lord and His offerings, placing his life in jeopardy because it is built upon no foundation.

The caution here is clear. “Do not” build your life without the Lord and the wisdom, understanding, and knowledge He provides. Only a fool would think they can build better than the Master Builder of all things.

I pray you are not counted among them today but if you are, the good news is that you can rebuild your life upon the right foundation. The Lord is ready to receive you and impart all the wisdom, understanding, and knowledge you need to set your foundation on the Rock, on the steady base of the Lord God Almighty, the One who longs for all of His children to learn how to build their lives properly.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
