DRINK FROM THE FOUNTAIN

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death.
Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.
Whoever heeds life-giving correction will be at home among the wise.
The words of the mouth are deep waters, but the fountain of wisdom is a rushing stream.

Proverbs 13:14, 13:20, 15:31,18:4

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”  John 4:10-14

“Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

These words of Jesus to the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well underscore the critical importance of seeking Him and the wisdom He brings. For when we think about the matter of wisdom, we have to talk about Jesus, God’s only Son and the only One ever who exhibited perfect wisdom during life on earth.

Note that the words of Jesus are not just instructional. They are life giving. No one can direct us better as to how to deal with life and its challenges except the One who is the Way and the Truth and the Life (John 14:6). He guides us through this life and He will usher us into the life to come as we enter into His presence and the presence of God the Father.

Yes, Jesus is truly the fountain of life, now and forever, and we should be drinking from His life providing, life sustaining well each and every day. Hopefully this is why you’re reading this devotion right now, because you’re thirsty and wanting a drink from the well that holds the fountain of wisdom created through the amalgamation of His word and Spirit. You come because you know that when you draw from this fountain, you are always filled and satisfied as these other words of Jesus come alive:

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled.” Matthew 5:6

The filled, those who have been thirsty for righteousness and become filled, are referred to as the wise, the ones who have sought and received the Lord’s guidance and are ready to pass it onto others. So what is there to gain from communing with the wise? Look at today’s proverbs:

The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death. Proverbs 13:14
Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm. Proverbs 13:20
Whoever heeds life-giving correction will be at home among the wise. Proverbs 15:31
The words of the mouth are deep waters, but the fountain of wisdom is a rushing stream. Proverbs 18:4

Want to continue to grow in wisdom? Don’t only drink regularly from the fountain of Christ and receive His righteousness but associate with others who do likewise in between. When we walk with the wise, we become wise. Conversely, hang out with fools and you’ll find yourself doing foolish things that bring harm.

Want to continue to be in the company of the wise, at home with their prudent, discerning ways? Then heed the life giving correction found through the wisdom of the Lord. Don’t just read it or receive it spiritually. Apply it to the way you live your own life.

Want to live life to the full, now and forever? Then seek and embrace the teaching of the wise, the teaching that will save you from the snares of death and the wrath of God. But if you decide to turn from wisdom, then essentially you are deciding to turn from Jesus and that will only leave you destined for destruction as you forfeit your opportunity for eternal life.

Friends, my prayer for you today is that you drink and drink often from the fountain of life that springs up from the well of Christ Jesus. Draw from His fountain and you will never thirst as you are filled by His righteousness. Swallow His wisdom and you will experience a life like no other, a life filled with joy and peace and contentment and love.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
