BRINGING GOOD NEWS

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a trustworthy envoy brings healing.
Light in a messenger’s eyes brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones.

Proverbs 13:17, 15:30

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Have you ever been around someone who is a pessimist? I know I have.

You know the kind of person I’m talking about, right?

The dictionary defines them as someone who tends “to stress the negative or unfavorable or to take the gloomiest possible view.” They believe that “evil in the world outweighs the good”, that the world we live in is the “worst of all possible worlds and that all things ultimately tend toward evil.”

The pessimist lives in the land of negativity where the glass is not just half empty but often empty all together. They are the ones who revel in delivering bad news. They see no light in life, only darkness, and so it’s little wonder why the message they bring is similar.

Look around and you’ll have little trouble finding pessimists today. They are a dime a dozen. This is a problem for the people of God because we can have a tendency to hang around with those who always see the bad in everything and when we do so, if we’re not careful, we can find ourselves drug into the same pit of darkness they reside in while we adopt their negative attitudes and approaches toward life.

This is why God’s word in our two proverbs is so valuable today. For the Lord is concerned about the kind of message we send to others through our words and attitudes. He expects us to being the message of good news to those we come into contact with each and every day. Look at these two verses:

A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a trustworthy envoy brings healing. Proverbs 13:17
Light in a messenger’s eyes brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones. Proverbs 15:30

Note the contrasts here. For the one who brings good news brings healing and light and joy and health to the people they talk to. There is hope and promise in the words they use, optimism and assurance in their attitudes. These people, the ones who bear good news, are the brokers of encouragement, even in the midst of difficulty. Rather than drag someone down, they always seek to life another up.

Is this not the kind of person you want to be around? Is this not the kind of person you would like to be?

Friends, these people, the people who always bring good news, are the people who are in and of the Lord. It’s as easy as that. Live in Him, and you live in His light and that light shines through all you do onto those around you. In the Lord, there is no bad news, unless you choose to not accept Him and His free promise of salvation. He stands ready to remove the darkness in your life, taking you from sin and plunging you into His realm of righteousness and right living. He is ready to change your life forever, to give you a new perspective, to make you a new creation, to change you now and forever.

That truly is good news, isn’t it?

So what will it be today? Will you continue to be a person who sees nothing good in the world? Will you choose to associate with people who bring you down instead of lift you up? Or will you decide right here and now to receive the good news of Jesus Christ in your heart, mind, and soul, accepting His grace, love, mercy, pardon, and salvation? Will you allow Christ to make you a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) and shine His light of hope into your world, drawing you to Him as He leads you to bring His good news to others?

Today, will be the best day of your life if you choose Christ or, if you have strayed, recommitted yourself to Him.

If you do, won’t you comment and bring your good news to myself and others? For those in Jesus never tire of receiving news like that.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
