The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.

1 Timothy 4:4-5

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

What do you consider to be good in your life?

Your job? Your family? Your home or car or some other possession?

Ask the person about what they see as good and you may get any variety of answers but as we see in today’s passage, the scriptures are providing us the answer to the question. Look again at these words from verses four and five of 1 Timothy, chapter 4:

For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.

In verse three of this chapter, we find Paul giving specific false teachings that would try to infiltrate and influence Christian believers to turn away from the faith in the later days. First, people would be ordered not to marry one another and second, they would be told to abstain from eating certain types of food.

Paul exhorts Timothy to ensure the Ephesian Christians were aware of this so they could reject such notions because “everything that God created is good” and nothing He created was to be rejected if “received with thanksgiving” which simply means that if God provides for us, we should show our gratitude towards Him.

God and God alone is the supreme Giver of every good and perfect gift (James 1:17) and anything we receive from Him has been set apart from anything else we’ve gotten from someone else.

If you are breathing and your heart is beating today, give thanks to God for He is the Giver.

If you have a job that brings your income to afford to cover your living expenses, give thanks to God for He is the Giver.

We all have a family. We need to give thanks to God for all who are in it because He is the Giver.

If you are married and have a husband or wife...and maybe children as well, give thanks to God for He is the Giver.

If you have a place to live, a car or other form of transport, and food to eat, give thanks to God for He is the giver.

And as a Christian, give thanks to God because He is the Giver of your salvation through the redeeming work of Jesus, His Son.

Friends, God is the Giver of anything good we have in our lives. Rejoice and be glad in knowing that He knows our needs, hears our prayers, and ensures we have what we need to serve Him and others.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
