The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

1 Timothy 6:17

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

We all need hope. It’s as essential as love and feeling valued in life.

So with this truth in place, a quick question:

Where do you put your hope?

Certainly, there are a lot of options and this is why you might find a variety of responses to the source of hope question. Ultimately, it comes down to the heart and what it treasures most. We know this because Jesus said this in His Sermon on the Mount:

“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:21

The idea here is that people will put there hope in whatever they treasure and you can identify that treasure by looking in the heart.

Now, none of us can look inside another person’s heart but the Lord can and this leads to a second question:

When the Lord looks in your heart, where would He see your hope abiding? Would He find it in Him or someone or something else?

Of course, any hope outside of God is a misplaced hope, a hope put in something that will not sustain for eternity. For no person or material possession is going to remain with someone forever. There will be a time where death happens, as it will for every living being, and when that happens, life here on earth ends.

Going back to the Sermon on the Mount, this is why Jesus had this to say about placing hope (storing up treasures) in the wrong things:

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. v.19

Treasures on earth don’t last. They are unsustainable. And if our hope is placed in these treasures, our hope won’t last either. It is sure to be eventually dashed one way or another.

As we look at today’s verse from the closing verses of 1 Timothy, chapter 6, we find the Apostle Paul sending a warning for Timothy, the pastor of the Ephesian church, to share with his congregants, some of which were obviously affluent. He writes:

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. v.17

In other words, Paul is encouraging those who were rich to not place “their hope in wealth” which “is so uncertain”. He followed the lead of Jesus in imploring them to not place their trust in treasures stored up on earth, treasures that were fleeting.

In other words, they were to refrain from placing their hope in places it didn’t belong and we need to heed this caution as well. For too many people place their hope in their possessions or in people they have relationship with only to find that hope dashed when they lose the very thing they have anchored their heart to.

The word of the Lord is clear in today’s scripture verse. The only proper placed to out our hope is in God and in Him alone, the One who “richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.” We are to place our full trust in the Creator rather than created things.

Go back to your answer to the question:

Where do you put your hope?

My prayer is that your full hope is in God, the One who longs for you to be as fully invested in Him as He is fully invested in You.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

To Him be honor and might forever. Amen.

1 Timothy 6:16d

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

God is supreme over all He has created, all things in Heaven and on earth. He is the singular, blessed Ruler who has no rival or equal, the King of all kings and Lord of all lords.

This sovereign God is immortal and has made the way through His Son Jesus for sinful humans to also gain salvation and eternal life, rescued from sure eternal destruction and damnation. So although He lives in unapproachable light and can’t be seen now, Christian believers will have the exclusive blessing of living with Him face to face while illuminated by His glorious light once ushered into His magnificent kingdom.

This is just a portion of what we have learned about the Maker and Master of all mankind in the just completed four part series, The Qualities of God, a series that should lead us to proclaim the same words as the Apostle Paul as He write in the sixth chapter of 1 Timothy:

To Him be honor and might forever. Amen. v.16d

Although we serve a God who rules in all supremacy over all creation, He isn’t distant from His people, from those He created. Rather, God is omnipresent and omniscient, two other important qualities. He is everywhere and knows all things. Period. No one else is like Him or can do what He can do.

He also is omnipotent which means He is all powerful. Think about that for a moment.

Our God possesses a power that is infinite. It has no limits and there is nothing beyond the work of His almighty hands. Therefore, there is nothing He can’t accomplish if He wishes to do so. Nothing.

There’s no problem we will go through that He can’t solve.

There’s no heart break we can go through that He can’t stitch together.

There’s no illness or affliction that He can’t heal or bring us through.

And there’s no sin that He can’t forgive.

With our God, there isn’t one single thing that is impossible for Him to do. He routinely makes the seemingly improbable probable.

All present. All knowing. All powerful. And let’s add one more “all” to this list:

All loving, for no one loves us as perfectly as He does.

Friends, we have no one in our life like God and this is why He and He alone deserves and warrants every single ounce of our admiration, glory, and praise. Every day, we need to lift up His holy name, the name above all names, and celebrate all that He has been, all that He is, and all He is yet to be on our lives. For we would be nothing without Him and dead in our sin had He not cared for us enough to give up His one and only Son.

So let us follow the lead of Paul and offer our Almighty God all the honor, now and forever more.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see

1 Timothy 6:15b-16c

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God

Have you ever seen God?

If so, you are the only person ever and if you truly did see Him, you wouldn’t be alive to tell about it. We know this from the very words of God Himself as He speaks to Moses in the 33rd chapter of the Book of Exodus

“...you cannot see My face, for no one may see Me and live.” v.20

And so since the dawn of creation, no one has seen God and no one will during this physical human life on earth but as we covered in yesterday’s message, there will be a day when all Christians will enter the kingdom of God and see their Lord face to face

Until that time comes, we wait but it’s important to note that although we can’t see God, it doesn’t mean He is somehow absent from us. Nothing could be further from the truth.

For although “no one has seen or can see God”, the fourth of His qualities that we find in 1 Timothy 6, not one single person can say that God hasn’t made Himself known to Him

Or in other words, no one can say that God doesn’t exist and this is the reason no one can see Him. Look at these words from the first chapter of Paul’s letter to the Romans:

Since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. Romans 1:20

God has, is, and will always show Himself through His “invisible qualities” which include “His eternal power and divine nature”. He has made it a point to be “clearly seen” by all people in creation, past and present, so they “are without excuse”. All know He exist whether they want to confess it or not because He has made Himself known to all.

One of my favorite Old Testament passages is at the end of the Book of Job. You will remember that Job, in the midst of his tragedies, challenges the fairness and justice of God as if he had the right to do so. And so we find God enter into the picture with the following response:

“Who is this that obscures My plans with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me.”

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone—while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?”

“Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb, when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness, when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place, when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt’?”

“Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place, that it might take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it? The earth takes shape like clay under a seal; its features stand out like those of a garment. The wicked are denied their light, and their upraised arm is broken.”

“Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep? Have the gates of death been shown to you? Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness? Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth? Tell Me, if you know all this.”

“What is the way to the abode of light? And where does darkness reside? Can you take them to their places? Do you know the paths to their dwellings? Surely you know, for you were already born! You have lived so many years!”

“Have you entered the storehouses of the snow or seen the storehouses of the hail, which I reserve for times of trouble, for days of war and battle? What is the way to the place where the lightning is dispersed, or the place where the east winds are scattered over the earth? Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain, and a path for the thunderstorm, to water a land where no one lives, an uninhabited desert, to satisfy a desolate wasteland and make it sprout with grass? Does the rain have a father? Who fathers the drops of dew? From whose womb comes the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens when the waters become hard as stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen?”

“Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades? Can you loosen Orion’s belt? Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons or lead out the Bear with its cubs? Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set up God’s dominion over the earth? Can you raise your voice to the clouds and cover yourself with a flood of water? Do you send the lightning bolts on their way? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?”

“Who gives the ibis wisdom or gives the rooster understanding? Who has the wisdom to count the clouds? Who can tip over the water jars of the heavens when the dust becomes hard and the clods of earth stick together?”

“Do you hunt the prey for the lioness and satisfy the hunger of the lions when they crouch in their dens or lie in wait in a thicket? Who provides food for the raven when its young cry out to God and wander about for lack of food?”

“Do you know when the mountain goats give birth? Do you watch when the doe bears her fawn? Do you count the months till they bear? Do you know the time they give birth? They crouch down and bring forth their young; their labor pains are ended. Their young thrive and grow strong in the wilds; they leave and do not return.”

“Who let the wild donkey go free? Who untied its ropes? I gave it the wasteland as its home, the salt flats as its habitat. It laughs at the commotion in the town; it does not hear a driver’s shout. It ranges the hills for its pasture and searches for any green thing.”

“Will the wild ox consent to serve you? Will it stay by your manger at night? Can you hold it to the furrow with a harness? Will it till the valleys behind you? Will you rely on it for its great strength? Will you leave your heavy work to it? Can you trust it to haul in your grain and bring it to your threshing floor?”

“The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully, though they cannot compare with the wings and feathers of the stork. She lays her eggs on the ground and lets them warm in the sand, unmindful that a foot may crush them, that some wild animal may trample them. She treats her young harshly, as if they were not hers; she cares not that her labor was in vain, for God did not endow her with wisdom or give her a share of good sense. Yet when she spreads her feathers to run, she laughs at horse and rider.”

“Do you give the horse its strength or clothe its neck with a flowing mane? Do you make it leap like a locust, striking terror with its proud snorting? It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength, and charges into the fray. It laughs at fear, afraid of nothing; it does not shy away from the sword. The quiver rattles against its side, along with the flashing spear and lance. In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground; it cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds. At the blast of the trumpet it snorts, ‘Aha!’ It catches the scent of battle from afar, the shout of commanders and the battle cry.”

“Does the hawk take flight by your wisdom and spread its wings toward the south? Does the eagle soar at your command and build its nest on high? It dwells on a cliff and stays there at night; a rocky crag is its stronghold. From there it looks for food; its eyes detect it from afar. Its young ones feast on blood, and where the slain are, there it is.” Job 38:2-41, 39:1-30

And with that, the Lord does the challenging, asking Job:

“Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct Him? Let him who accuses God answer Him!” 40:2

To which Job replies:

“I am unworthy—how can I reply to You? I put my hand over my mouth.” 40:4

Why do I share this passage with you?

Because, like Job, we all need to be reminded of all the ways God has and is revealing Himself to His people. I would encourage you to read on in Job because God continues to make His point in the remaining verses of chapter 40 and all of chapter 41.

In the end translation as we close this series, while God is unseen, He is never unknown or dormant. That’s the bottom line.

Creation as we know it reveals His work and working.

Answered prayers reveal His work and working.

And every time we read His Word, He reveals Himself more and more so that when we receive our salvation promise and abide with God forever, we will see Him for the first time but already know a lot about Him because He made it so.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light.

1 Timothy 6:15b-16b NIV

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

God has many qualities that He reveals to us through His holy Word. One such place is in the final chapter of 1 Timothy as Paul writes to his former ministry protégé who had matured in Christian leadership to assume the pastoral responsibilities over the church in Ephesus.

To date, we’ve seen where God is the ultimate, sovereign Ruler over all creation, the King of kings and Lord of lords. We have also been reminded of His immortality, that we serve a God who will never die and neither will anything we are blessed with from Him.

That brings us to today’s message, part three in this four part series, as we look at yet another quality found in our God. Look once more at these words from the second part of verse 15 and two thirds of verse 16:

God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light.

Now, the matter of God being light is not a new revelation in the scriptures. For as we look at God’s word in whole, here’s what we find in this quality He possesses:

This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:5

Here in John’s Gospel, we are reminded that light is in God’s very essence. He doesn’t just have light but He IS Light. When one looks at His being, there is no darkness, only a glorious, magnificent, holy illumination. The prophet Habakkuk described like this:

God came from Teman, the Holy One from Mount Paran. His glory covered the heavens    and His praise filled the earth. His splendor was like the sunrise. Habakkuk 3:3-4a

If you’ve ever had the wonderful experience of catching a beautiful sunrise, then you will have a general idea of the exquisite nature of God’s Light, a Light we will one day see face to face. More on that later.

So what can His people gain from His Light?

Once again, we find some of the answers in the scriptures, like these words from 2 Corinthians, chapter 4:

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. v.6

God shines His light into our hearts so that we can shine His light on others. In other words, believers receive “the light of the knowledge of the glory of God” and in turn, they can share news of that glory as they go about the work He calls them to do.

Believers also gain wisdom and understanding from God’s light. Consider these verses that testify to this truth:

The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple. Psalm 119:130

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105

Send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling! Psalm 43:3

God doesn’t leave His people in a place where they need to figure things out on their own. Rather, He shines His light on us and “imparts understanding” out of the dark recesses of our spiritual ignorance, leading us to truth. And as we allow His words to take root in our hearts and minds while seeking and then carrying out His will, He shines His light to illuminate the path He wants us to travel.

In other words, God will always use His light to equip us to do His work while revealing where He wants that work to be accomplished. All we need to do is submit to His leading and follow that divine light He sends.

So we know that light is not only a quality of God but something at His core. And because He is God, His light is unrivaled and unmatched in magnificence and magnitude but here’s the thing.

None of us will have a full grasp on the brilliant radiance that is God on this side of Heaven. We know this because His word assures us an important aspect of His light is that it is unapproachable. Look at other translations of this verse and you will find that unapproachable is rendered:

“...so brilliant that no human can approach Him.” NLT

“...light that no one can come near.” CEV

“...light that no one can approach.” GNT

In this human existence, we will never fully be able to appreciate the incredible majesty and splendor of our God as we will never be able to get near enough to Him to see it. Thankfully, this separation will one day be removed for those who have placed their belief in Jesus who said this in John’s Gospel:

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me (14:6).”

While salvation carries with it the assurance of Heaven and escape from Hell, it also ensures us that we will one day see our God and His Son, our Savior, face to face. We won’t simply see God’s light in part but in whole as we read in these wonderful verses from Isaiah and Revelation, verses that discuss what is yet to come:

Night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever. Revelation 22:5

The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. Your sun will never set again, and your moon will wane no more; the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your days of sorrow will end. Isaiah 60:19-20

Can you imagine what this is going to look like one day when those saved in Christ enter into the promised eternal kingdom?

God’s light will illuminate everything. There will be no other need for an alternate source. And since there is no darkness in God, we know that there will be no darkness there as there won’t even be night anymore. The Lord God Almighty will be our everlasting light as we reign with Him forever and ever.

Friends, I don’t know about you but I get thoroughly excited when I consider that this world I now live in is not my true home, that a far better place has been prepared for me by the Savior Jesus I believe in (John 14:1-3). It’s what keeps me encouraged even as I see this world going more and more into decline every day.

The good news is the best is yet to come and it’s going to be greater and more breathtaking than we can comprehend. Thanks be to God for being our light and making a way through His Son Jesus to one day remove the barrier of approachability from Himself.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal.

1 Timothy 6:15b-16a

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

In yesterday’s opening devotion in this series on the Qualities of God, we saw the scriptures affirming our Lord’s ultimate authority over all creation. The Maker of all things is also the Master over all He made. He is the “blessed and only Ruler” who is the King of all kings and Lord over all lords. Since the very beginning, He has no rival or equal as He reigns in absolute sovereignty over everything in Heaven and on earth.

Today, we see another important quality of God revealed in the first part of 1 Timothy 6, verse 16. For the scriptures tell us that God “alone is immortal”.

In other words, the God who oversees creation with complete supremacy over it will never cease to be. He will never die.

Of interest, the Christian group, Newsboys, released a single that was titled, “God’s Not Dead” in 2011. The chorus carried these words:

My God's not dead, He's surely alive

He's living on the inside, roaring like a lion

God's not dead, He's surely alive

He's living on the inside, roaring like a lion

It was a song that called for revival, for people who may be dead in their faith or sins to allow the living God to bring their souls back to life with the energy and power one would find in the roar of a mighty lion.

This song had a big impact on Christian culture at the time as a movie bearing the same title was born out of it in 2014. In the movie, a Christian college student was challenged by his unbelieving philosophy professor to prove his point that God was real and alive, not simply a fictional entity. If you haven’t seen it, I would highly recommend it, especially as we encounter other people in our evangelistic journeys who, like the professor in the movie, question the reality of God’s existence.

Indeed, God isn’t dead and is very much alive today as He has been since the dawn of creation (Genesis 1:1 states “In the beginning God”) and will always be because He alone is immortal.

Friends this is good news for all of us, news we should embrace and never take advantage. For is God is a forever God who cannot die then everything about Him is forever as well.

His total authority will endure forever.

His amazing, unmatched power will endure forever.

His boundless love will endure forever.

His undeserved mercy and grace will endure forever but so will His judgment for those who choose to not believe in Jesus as Savior.

His perfect wisdom and truth will endure forever as will every promise He has made.

Today and every day, let us rejoice and be glad that our God has the quality of immortality and will be alive and abiding with us forever.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords.

1 Timothy 6:13-15

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Many people in the world today do not know God in their lives. Despite the fact that the Bible has been around for the ages and accessible to a majority of the earth’s population today, the very holy book that God uses to reveal Himself and His salvation plan for all creation remains unknown to many.

So with so many people not knowing who God is and how He applies to the lives they live, this next series of messages are very important for as we continue to study from 1 Timothy, chapter 6, we find the scriptures revealing God’s qualities. Let’s begin by looking at verses 13 through 15:

In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords.

Rather than fall into the love of money and its associated potential for sin and evil, the Apostle Paul had commanded Timothy, the Ephesian believers, and even us today to pursue life qualities that would be beneficial to us in the sight of the Lord. You may remember that these qualities, covered in yesterday’s message, included righteousness, godliness, love, gentleness, and endurance in faith. All could easily be obtained by modeling the way we live in accordance with the life of Jesus as revealed in the Gospels.

This was what we find the Apostle Paul talking about as he charges Timothy and all those who would read or hear his words “in the sight of God who gives life to everything and of Christ Jesus” to pursue these qualities “without spot or blemish” until the time when Jesus would appear again.

When will that happen? When can we expect Jesus to come back to earth as the scriptures promise?

Paul makes it clear, just as Jesus had before (Matthew 24:36), that only God knew the time when He would send His Son back to judge the world. It would be at His appointed time just as He dictates everything that happens within creation. In other words, God has been, is, and will always be in total control of all things in Heaven and on earth.

This frames the first qualities we learn about God in 1 Timothy 6. For we read where He is “the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings, and Lord of lords”.

In other words, God is unrivaled and unmatched in sovereignty and authority, period.

No nation anywhere is greater than He is.

No ruler of a nation, state, or territory - whether a king, lord, president, prime minister, or whatever esteemed title might be placed upon a supreme leader – is greater than God Himself. Everyone and everything is subordinate to Him.

And yet, so many countries and their leaders in our world today conduct themselves like they are gods unto themselves. They definitely don’t go about their business in a way that seeks God’s counsel, allowing Him to dictate what they do. This is perhaps the biggest problem we exist within, a seemingly total disregard and disrespect for the supremacy and majesty of the God who created the heavens and earth as well as all things within them.

Ultimately, God is going to have His way just as He has throughout history. Just in biblical times alone, we see the rise and fall of mighty empires like the Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, and Romans. All came into great power and all failed to acknowledge God as supreme in authority to them. And so they perished while God remained, esteemed and elevated over all.

Who is God?

He is the blessed and only Ruler over all things, the King over every king and the Lord over every lord. With this, every nation and its people should bow down and worship Him, lavishing all honor, glory, and praise upon Him because only He is worthy of it.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

1 Timothy 6:11-12

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Through most of chapter 6 of 1 Timothy, we find God’s word offering two main points to all Christian believers:

1. Getting obsessed with the accumulation of wealth is foolishness because nothing you gain here in the world will go with you when you die. You were born naked and with nothing and you won’t take anything with you when life ends.

2. Don’t allow the love of money lead you into sin and evil.

Through the messages on this matter, we have looked at Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in Matthew, chapter 6, where we find Him exhorting His followers to store up treasures in Heaven, treasures that hold eternal value, instead of chasing after the treasures of the earth which is code for materialism (Vv. 19-20).

As we return to 1 Timothy 6 and our two verses for today (verses 11 and 12), we find the Apostle Paul revealing life pursuits that are more beneficial for Christian believers, pursuits that will help them store up the treasures in Heaven that Jesus promoted. Look again at his words here:

But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

As we have covered earlier, Timothy, the one Paul wrote to, was the pastor of the church in Ephesus. Endorsed by churches in Lystra and Iconium, he joined Paul’s missionary team as a young man and through the mentoring of the apostle, matured to the place where he could minister a congregation on his own.

It’s obvious that a passion for money and riches was prevalent among the Ephesian people and so Paul wanted to address the matter with Timothy so he, in turn, could address it with the Ephesian Christian believers. All would have been considered people of God, His children and co-heirs with Jesus through their belief in Him.

So Paul called His brothers and sisters in Christ to “flee from” any temptations to chase after money and gives them some more positive things to pursue, things we need to go after in life as well today. They included the following:

1. Righteousness.

Simply put, this was a call for right living in the sight of God and that meant (and still means) living in accordance with His will.

Not what we think is right. Not what the world says is right.

No other behavior except that which our Lord has called us to, behaviors that were modeled by Jesus, His Son. As Christians, we are to live Christ-like and we have no better role model for righteous living than Jesus.

Follow Him and mimic His life with your own and you will always be living in a way that honors and glorifies God. Or in other words, your life will be seen as godly in nature, the second beneficial life pursuit.

2. Godliness.

Indeed, righteousness leads to godliness which is a holy life defined by a consistently deep reverence for God, the One who made the way to save us through Jesus, His Son. If we dedicate ourselves to live as Jesus did, we will always respect and worship God through everything we do.

3. Love.

At the heart of the Bible and God’s salvation narrative is the matter of love.

God so loved the world that He gave His only Son Jesus so that whoever believes in Him won’t perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). Before His death and resurrection, Jesus responded to a question regarding what was the greatest commandment, offering two responses centered on love.

First, He said we are to love God with all our heart and mind and soul and strength, before adding we’re to then love our neighbors as we love ourselves (Mark 12:30-31).

When we live in righteousness which leads to godliness, we can’t help but see love as central to everything we do. For when we are obedient to the command to love God with all that we are then His love becomes all that we are and is evident in all that we do. And as the old hymn proclaims, they will know we are Christians by our love.

4. Gentleness.

Just as righteousness leads to godliness, so too does love lead to gentleness.

Look at the life of Jesus and you will find a loving Savior who was gentle and compassionate toward others. Many times He could have rebuked with harsh words but instead He spoke words that were kind and tender. We need to follow His lead as we minister to others today and the Holy Spirit will guide us there as we submit to His direction. When we do, we will fulfill the call of God’s word to let our gentleness be evident to everyone (Philippians 4:5).

5. Endurance in faith.

Finally, we find Paul encouraging Timothy, the Ephesian believers, and us today to show endurance in our faith.

Life wasn’t easy as the Christian church was beginning to take root in first century A.D. and it hasn’t been easy for Christians ever since. Believing in Jesus has never been a panacea or escape from the woes of life. Hardship and suffering are as sure as the salvation we will gain at this life’s end and so we had better be prepared to deal with it.

How can we do this?

The scriptures provide the answer for we are called to “fight the good fight of the faith”, understanding that no matter how difficult life becomes, the best is yet to come through the promised eternal life through Jesus. God’s word calls all Christ believers to “take hold” of this salvation promise and never let go of it. For through it, we have a hope that no trial or tribulation can remove from us. When things get hard, look to the cross and remember that things were harder for our Savior and yet, He endured through faith to gain victory, just as we will one day.

The world may want us to show a desire for money and all the possessions it can bring us but if we are obedient to God’s word and focus our life pursuits on righteousness, godliness, love, and gentleness while enduring in faith, we will find the only true beneficial riches come from our Lord who wants to lavish them upon us in abundance.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
