The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good.
2 Thessalonians 3:13
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Every day is full of opportunity.
As I have gotten older and matured more and more in my Christian faith, I believe this is the one life principle that continues to come to the forefront more than any other.
I say this because time is one of the greatest commodities given by God and the beauty of it is that everyone gets the same amount. We all get 24 hours a day.
Now, even though time is the great equalizer between people, transcending socio-economic and cultural boundaries, what isn’t identical is the way that people use the time that God has given them. Like the micro differences between individual flakes of snow, no two people identically use their time the same way and let’s be clear here. We all have a choice as to how we do so. No one dictates how we opt to use our time.
Christian songwriter and singer Chris Rice penned these lyrics in response to this truth, that we have the freedom to use our time as we wish:
Every day is a bank account and time is our currency.
So no one’s rich, nobody’s poor.
We all get 24 hours each.
So how are you gonna spend?
Will you invest or squander?
Try to get ahead or help someone who’s under?
Teach us to count the days.
Teach us to make the days count.
Lead us in better ways for somehow our souls forgot.
Life means so much.
Life means so much.
Life means so much.
Ask yourself, how do you spend your time daily?
Do you invest in making a difference in the lives of others for the cause of Christ?
Or do you squander the precious time the Lord has given you, providing no return on His investment in you?
These are questions we all need to seriously consider as believers.
As we turn to our single verse for today from the final chapter of 2 Thessalonians, we find Paul aggressively addressing the matter of using time wisely as he writes to his brother and sister Christians in Thessalonica. He writes this:
“And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good.” v. 13
What is the good that Paul exhorts here?
It is anything that we do that is in obedience to God’s calling and pleasing in His sight. For when we carry out His word and will, following the lead of the Holy Spirit, we will always ensure that everything we do is good and right.
Indeed, the Lord calls us to constant and consistent righteousness and we are to pursue it tirelessly. We should never feel spent in our efforts to fulfill the Lord’s desires and if we do begin to feel weary, we turn to Him and He lifts us up on wings like eagles (Isaiah 40:28-31). He will always bring us through what He calls us to, especially when it comes to doing the good He wants us to do.
This day, the day you are reading the message the Lord has provided, is a day full of opportunity. Make the most of it, and every other 24 hour period the Lord gives you, by tirelessly seeking righteousness so that you might ever do the good He wants you to do.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
