The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-13a

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Churches don’t function in a vacuum. You may enter into one on Sunday and enjoy a great worship experience, filled with wonderful music and a well prepared message from the pulpit, but a lot of work went into making that hour to hour and a half happen and many of the people behind the scenes remain unrecognized for what they do.

Musicians and singers have to rehearse and practice. Audio/visual workers make sure the graphics are displayed on time so everyone will know the words to sing, the scripture verses being highlighted, or the church events that are happening.

The church is kept tidy by someone with the responsibility to clean it and make it presentable to the congregation.

Typically, there are people stationed at the doors of the church and the entrance to the sanctuary to happily greet those attending service. Often times a volunteer has prepared coffee which is available in the welcome center.

Many families attend church and small children can be looked after and cared for by volunteers while the parents worship. This offering will usually extend to teens in middle and high school.

And pastors put a lot of thought, prayer, and preparation into the Bible-based sermons they deliver each and every week.

As we look at our verses today from the fifth chapter of Paul’s first letter to the church in Thessalonica, we find the Apostle exhorting the Christian believers to respect and appreciate those who work in support of their worship and service experience. Look again at his words here:

Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Vv.12-13a

When you go to worship this week, and every week thereafter, remember these words from Paul to the Thessalonian Christians and put them into practice. Intentionally acknowledge and thank those who “work hard” and “care for you in the Lord”, holding them “in the highest regard” out of love for the work that they do.

Trust me when I say that it will mean the world to them and to the Lord who has called them to His service.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
