The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created.
Colossians 1:15b NLT
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Who is Jesus?
It’s a question we are providing answers to through this series as we look at the first chapter of Paul’s letter to the church in Colossae.
In yesterday’s opener, we saw where Jesus and God were one, Christ being the visible image of the invisible God. Today, we are looking at the second half of verse 15 that states:
He existed before anything was created.
For some reinforcement on this truth, a truth that shows us Jesus existed well before Mary delivered Him, let’s look back to the opening chapter of the Gospel of John. There we find this:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.
The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:1-2, 14
John connects Jesus, “the Word”, to the very advent of the creation story. Like the first chapter of Genesis, we see the same three-word lead in, “In the beginning”.
In the beginning was the Word, Jesus, who was the “visible image of the invisible God”. At the appointed time, predicted by the Old Testament prophets, He would become flesh and make His dwelling place among man so that all would see the full glory of God, bringing the new covenant of salvation for all people, Jew or Gentile.
Look to the very start of creation and there was Jesus because as He proclaimed, He and the Father were one (John 10:30). He (Jesus) then existed before anything else was created.
That’s just one more thing we need to know about who He is.
Tomorrow, we’ll continue to learn more.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
