The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of His resurrection and participation in His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.
Philippians 3:10-11
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Most people love to live. After all, this life offers so much for us with its endless possibilities and opportunities to love and learn. It’s a big world out there and the truth of the matter is the average person will only scratch the proverbial surface of its available experiences.
This is because the worldly life we live in is finite. As sure as we know we have been born, we know we will one day die. Every body has an expiration date that is unknown. In fact, you will hear people say that they have a bucket list, a series of things they would like to do or places they would like to visit before they pass away. It lends validity to the truth that no one lives forever, at least in this world.
But what if we could live on beyond this worldly existence? What if death didn’t have to really be the end? And what if living on after death could be eternal, a life free from every hardship and suffering and sin that plagues us in this worldly life?
Wouldn’t this be something that everyone should want?
The good news is that this has been, is, and will be available to anyone who wants it. It’s been true since Jesus died to atone for the sins of all mankind and then was resurrected from the tomb, brought back to life by the very power of the God who sent Him. The same power that raised Jesus from the grave will also raise anyone who simply believes in Him as Savior.
Looking at our passage for today as we continue to examine Philippians, chapter 3, we see the Apostle Paul proclaiming his priority in life as he wrote from a Roman prison cell.
I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of His resurrection and participation in His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. Vv. 10-11
Note here that Paul wasn’t concerned about anything in his present existence. He wasn’t concerned here with his freedom from physical incarceration but his future beyond death. He wanted to only know Christ fully, to experience everything his Savior experienced which included His sufferings. Surely, Paul saw his current circumstances as a part of the same persecution Jesus experienced during His ministry.
Beyond that, the Apostle longed to know the same power of resurrection that Jesus did so that he could also experience everlasting life, rising up from his worldly death.
Friends, there are plenty of things the world would offer us to know but none of them will bring us salvation. Only knowing Jesus can do that.
Do you know Him today?
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
