The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,
To God’s holy people in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus:
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
Ephesians 1:1-3
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise Him, all creatures here below
Praise Him above, ye heavenly hosts
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
Maybe you’ve had the privilege of singing these wonderful words which comprise what has widely been known as the Doxology. It’s a short four lines of absolute praise to the God of all creation, the Maker and Master of all things.
Right away, God is attributed as the source of all blessings. He is the One from which flows every good and perfect gift (James 1:17).
These blessings are often tangible in nature. God is our great Provider, the giver of life itself and everything a person needs to physically survive.
If your heart is breathing and you can draw breath in and out of your lungs, give thanks because God is responsible.
If you have a home to live in and a car to drive, be grateful because God has given you what you need for shelter and transportation.
If you have a job, express gratitude because God has placed you in a position where you can earn a wage to help pay for your living expenses.
And if you have food in your pantry and refrigerator, show appreciation to God who makes the way for meat, vegetables, and other foods to find their way to the stores you shop.
You get the point, if we have anything to help us physically get through life, God is the cause, the source of our blessings.
But as we see in today’s passage from the opening three verses of his letter to the Ephesians, the Apostle Paul reminds us that God also gives us spiritual blessings. Look again at his words here:
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,
To God’s holy people in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus:
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. Ephesians 1:1-3
Here we learn that God just doesn’t give us every good and perfect gift from above physically but spiritually as well and every spiritual blessing is found in Jesus, His Son.
Indeed, Christ is the only spiritual blessing that matters in the big scheme of things. He is the only source of salvation and the sole individual who can bring a person to God.
In other words, God gave us the gift of Jesus so that through Jesus, He might give us the gift of eternal life.
Today and every day, let us never cease to praise God for His abundant goodness for He and He alone is the source of our blessings.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
